GRANT WRITERS

As a grant writer myself for over 26 years, I have a 94% success rate and managed 59 grants. Since 1993, as a Grant Professor, I’ve taught more than 3,000 beginning and experienced grant writers. I designed the Inte et’s 1st Grant Writing Basics online course in 1997 and the 1st college grant writing certification program at Truckee Meadow Community College (Reno, NV) in 2001. My 2nd Masters Thesis (2003) focused on the successful grant writing strategies used by 80+ grant writing experts. In 2011, I founded the GPC Exam Prep Courses Online to help people prepare for the Grant Professional Certification (GPC) exam from the privacy of your own home or office; students have a 100% pass rate on the 1st try. In 2012, I designed the #1 Grant Readiness training in the U.S. and have received hundreds of positive testimonials around our training on How to Create a Grant Readiness 3-Ring Binder. We also offer the 30-Day Grant Writing Fast Track and Grant Writing Newsletter for beginning grant writers.

NONPROFITS/CHARITIES

Nonprofits learned how to write proposals that garnered over $1.2 Billion in grant funding in only two-and-a-half years using the grant writing system that has been time-tested over 26 years. In 2010, a Charles Schwab Bank VP asked if I would help take the Alliance for Nevada Nonprofits (ANN) to the next level in its growth and create a virtual business model that would be sustainable while serving the more than 8,000 nonprofits in Nevada. After 2.5 years, ANN has experienced phenomenal growth with zero overhead: $828,516 in savings for nonprofits, 13,382 hours of professional development provided to 3,794 nonprofit leaders and 11 sustainable revenue streams. Phil created the Nonprofit Website Project to help nonprofits take control of their websites, save money and get more traffic.

Over 26 years, we’ve discovered that “grants” are both a blessing and a curse (when funding runs out). One of the hardest things I’ve ever done is tell 3,000 students and 27 teachers that they no longer had classes when $500,000/year in federal grant funding ran out. I learned the lesson the hard way. Since that first grant, every single grant-funded program we started has had a strong Sustainability Plan which has led to ALL of them thriving today! For nonprofits, I also offer Sustainability Planning; a 3-Day Grants Conference; and the New Revenue Strategies weekly alerts, case studies, and webinars.

Have you heard of the term “seed money”? Basically, it refers to how grant funders prefer to fund a project the first time, plant the seed for future growth. The funder expects that you will be able to sustain the program once it’s started. Why? Donors are not interested in adopting a project indefinitely. Funders want assurances that the project they fund – or the benefits it generates – will endure over time. Ask yourself 2 questions: 1) What kind of assurance can you give that the idea or project you’re proposing will endure over time?

Mistake #1 - Don’t Follow Instructions One of the top two reasons funders give for denying proposals is because applicants fail to follow instructions. Now, before you disregard this one as being “too simple,” take a look at one federal government agency’s instructions. Their guidelines include: • When sending the application packet, do not use staples, paper clips or fasteners. Nothing should be attached, stapled, folded or pasted. • All type should be printed in Times New Roman, 12-point font. • All margins must be at least one inch and only one column per page.

Mistake #6 – No Pre-Proposal Contact In a study of 10,000 federal grant proposals, the only variable that was statistically significant in separating the funded and rejected proposals was whether or not the grant writer made a pre-proposal contact with the funder. Once you have determined some potential funders for your project, the importance of contacting them before you submit your proposal is paramount. Consider these facts:
