If the total surface area of loose tissue around your teeth were unwrapped and measured, the area would be about nine square inches; about the size of your forearm. “80% of all adults have had some degree of periodontal disease”, sites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. However, it’s in the mouth, out-of-sight, so it does not get attention.

It may seem strange how some seemingly unrelated diseases are linked, but as more and more research is done, we find those links do exist. Take psoriasis, an autoimmune disease (as is rheumatoid arthritis). It has recently been reported that periodontal disease may be linked to it.

More and more evidence surfaces each year linking periodontal disease and other systemic diseases that are not in the mouth. In the presence of periodontal disease, the risk is much higher in contracting one or more of the other diseases. There are two types of gum disease. Periodontal infection is the advanced stages of gum disease that causes bone loss. The bone loss is irreversible. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and with early detection, treatment and proper oral hygiene can be reversed.

Are you one of those people who are rightfully fearful of the pesticides and toxins in and on our food supply? Do you buy organic fruits, vegetables, free-range chickens and cage-free eggs? That's great, BUT how many of you lack good oral hygiene or don't insist on good oral hygiene for your family? Those individuals who neglect or give cursory care to their oral health do not truly understand toxins. They don't realize that the amounts of toxins produced by the bugs in their mouth are doing far more damage to their health and longevity than the pesticides on that organic apple.
