Robert Homer left his career as a research scientist based on a decision to pursue a clinical career in medicine and psychiatry. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Physics from Brandeis University, graduating Cum Laude, with Honors in Physics. He earned both his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Miami. His medical doctorate was awarded by the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He received his specialty training in psychiatry at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. He is a Diplomate in the specialty of Psychiatry with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and a Diplomate in Addiction Medicine with the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He received a Certification in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy from the New York Medical College, and is designated as a Master Psychopharmacologist with Distinction by the Neuroscience Education Institute. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Association of Clinical Psychopharmacology.

8/2002-Present: Private outpatient practice in general psychiatry located in Boca Raton, FL. Consultation Liaison at Boca Raton Community Hospital and Boca Raton Rehabilitation Center. From 2008 through 2011, also worked part-time as an Attending Psychiatrist at the Guidance Care Centers in Marathon, and Key West, Florida.

7/2000-8/2002: Staff Psychiatrist, St. Albans Center, Radford, VA. General psychiatry including inpatient, outpatient, Consultation Liaison services, and Medical Director of the Intensive Outpatient Program for treating chemical dependency.

1996 2000: Psychiatry Resident, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, NY. Moonlighting in the outpatient clinic. Research on neuropsychiatric aspects of infant and child personality and cognitive development; cognitive impairment following cardiac surgery; dual diagnosis group treatment (ran a COPAD group); and methadone treatment (utilizing PET).

Abstract: Integrative psychiatry is a holistic approach that utilizes both conventional and complementary therapies. The term holistic implies treating the patient as a whole person, thus in this approach the individual's overall physical, mental, spiritual and emotional wellbeing are taken into consideration. My focus is on what I have found to be both practical and useful in the context of my own practive in clinical psychiatry. This includes the use of nutritional supplements.

In this context dual diagnosis refers to those who have nonnicotine substance abuse or dependence in addition to another axis I or axis II disorder. While statistics vary widely, dual diagnosis occurs commonly in the severe mentally ill, occurring with a prevalence of about one-third in psychiatric inpatients. Despite a rather exhaustive search of the literature and Internet, there is a scarcity of information comparing Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulator (CES) devices to one another in terms of mechanism of action or efficacy.
