I spent over 15 years working in higher education, 13 of which were in residence life. This meant that there were several times of year when I spent more time on campus getting ready for students to arrive tha I did with my family. It wasn't uncommon during August to work until 1 a.m. some nights, getting projects done in my residence hall commons so we would being ready for Fall Arrival and Welcome Week. Every year, I said “I am not going to do this to myself,” and every year, that promise to myself and my family fell flat on its face, exhausted, sighing, and maybe even snoring.

Every August, new faculty and staff arrive on campus, to begin their new jobs. The month is packed full of meetings and preparations, and soon enough fades into memory, as freshman orientation passes, classes begin, and at some schools, football and tailgating roll into town. For new staff and faculty, the excitement soon gives way to routines and normalcy, and eventually, a feeling of being at home. But what should you do if September rolls around, and despite all your best efforts, you still don't have a job? First, don't give up.

If you work in higher education, you are probably already a pretty successful person, and have some pretty good ideas about where you want to go in life. Teaching positions require graduate education, and many administrative posts also require at least a master's degree.

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Sean Cook

Job searching in Higher Education is different from the traditional corporate job search. The rules for resumes are different (administrative resumes can easily be 3-4 pages, and senior administrators and faculty will often have CVs anywhere between 10-30 pages, depending on their publications, affiliations and expertise.) Interviews for even the "entry level" jobs in higher education may be multi-person, multi-day, or multi-stage. The interview experience may feature presentations, meals, tours, lodging and meetings with everyone from student volunteers to the Dean, President or Chancellor.

By working with a coach that has extensive experience in higher education, including hiring experience, professional staff supervision, training and evaluation, you get someone who speaks your language, understands the nuances of higher ed job searches, and I can help you get where you want to go in your career.
