Usually people are “difficult” because they are going about getting their needs met in the only way they know how. They have very specific (and we might think “overly rigid”) ways of feeling powerful and having esteem; they focus narrowly on controlling things, situations, and people so that they can get the outcomes that will enable them to feel good. They are not able to feel good by connecting meaningfully with you for who you really are.

Over the last few months, I gave a number of trainings at companies like Procter and Gamble, Pfizer, and GE so I had a chance to talk to a lot of business professionals like you. One of the themes I heard was the importance of turning obstacles into opportunity. According to Accenture (2010), 71% of senior executives say it is the trait they are looking for in making retention and promotion choices. Business owners who can do this well keep their business afloat in difficult times.

Remember that middle-school essay writing tradition: “What I did on my Summer Vacation?” Today’s blog is my adult version of that exercise: What I learned at Summer Camp 2012 – An Easier Way to Achieve Your Goals. Did you think I was kidding about the summer camp part? I did actually spend a weekend at a camp for adults. It was a joyful whirlwind of volleyball, trapeze, obstacle course, ping pong, and even a little bit of learning how to play Texas Hold’em poker. Big fun.

“What if they think my comment isn’t smart?” “Is the answer to my question in the materials they distributed or explained in a prior meeting?” “I don’t think I have as much experience as they think I do, I better not state my idea with conviction - this way I have an out if my recommendations don’t turn out to be right.” That’s what Michael told me was on his mind when he decided not to speak up in the meeting with his boss, his colleagues, and their prospects.

After 3 ½ hours of jumping, thumping, and pumping at a Bruce Springsteen concert last week, lyrics to his song “Wrecking Ball” kept looping in my head: “If you think it’s your time, then step to the line, C’mon take your best shot… let me see what you’ve got! Bring on your wrecking ball.” (The song is actually about the destruction of the former Giants Stadium in favor of the current MetLife one, but stay with me here, the words apply never-the-less!)

We are interrupted on average 7x/hour and waste approximately 2.1 hours a day on distractions. You’ve probably been thinking that since interruptions originate with another person, they need to be the one to stop it – but you have more control than you think. I’m putting together a resource guide for you about how to find more time in your day and stay focused amidst never ending distractions – it leaks a number of the tips I wrote in my forthcoming book Success under Stress (December 2012). Look for it in my upcoming emails…

Elite athletes, such as the two champions who recently stayed at peak performance for a five-hour tennis match, demonstrate an optimal natural pattern to their exertion. It is a Sprint/Recovery pattern, in which you focus intensely and then recover and replenish your energy by doing something that fully disengages the parts of your brain focused on work and effectively rejuvenates you. For most of us, the optimum pattern is 90 minutes of intense focus followed by renewal. This number is based on our natural circadian rhythms that go in 90 minute cycles throughout the day.

There are always 3 strategies you can use to tackle any stressful situation: Problem Perception Physiology Usually you might only think about trying to “change the problem”, and if you can’t do that then you might think you have to just put up with it. This framework shows you that there is a lot more you can control than you think. Here are two examples, first from a new client of mine who’s starting a company and second, from a participant at one of my speeches to a NY financial company who’s getting piled on at work.

My client’s boss said to me about my client: We had a plan in place to move forward with pricing. She was in the situation and just went with the idea that came to her mind. “She needs to think instead of react.” My sister in law told me about her day last week as a pre-school teacher: “I came home and snapped at the kids.” How about you: Do you think, or do you react?

The end of summer is over. What has the highlight of your summer been? Sure, go on…relive that moment now. For me it happened last week while in the San Francisco Bay Area after doing a training on Influence and Friction-Free Relationships for a company. I took off a handful of days to go mountain biking in Lake Tahoe and then visited with my two oldest friends – healthy organic food, lots of laughs, supporting one another’s direction. Most of the time I was able to be ‘off’, but there were still some moments that thoughts about work still made me feel ‘on’.

You know not to think the obvious kinds of negative thoughts. Thoughts like “I am not as smart as my counterparts” or “I can’t…” Those are easily identified as thoughts to remove from your mental diet. Here are 3 other kinds of ‘empty calories’ thoughts. Cut them out immediately! 1. Unanswerable questions – When things aren’t going your way, you often ask an unanswerable question, such as Why don’t things work out for me? or Why does it look so easy for the guy who sits next to me? or Why doesn’t the person in operations get back to me?
