I am a professional artist in Portland, Oregon, and have lived a life of a person afflicted with schizo-affective disorder, which gives me the experience dealing with this disease, what prescribed drugs will help me and how to get help from my doctors. For 3 1/2 years I have attended colleges at Southern Oregon College, Umpqua Community, and Oregon State University with Majors in Elementary Education and Physical Education with Minors in Secondary Education and Sociology. I earned a CNA certificate in 1981 and for 20 years worked as a nurse aide with patients who had dementia, Alzheimer's and Cancer. Later, as a Preschool teacher I worked with children with Autism, ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder. I have acquired certificates in Recognizing Child Abuse, Violence and Prevention, Impact of ADHD on Social Development, and The Special Needs Child.

Currently I am working with NAMI Multnomah as a lecturer in the psyche wards and am an In Our Own Voice presenter. I give a meditation exercise with my lectures and I have spoken at Hospitals and Universities in Portland, Oregon. My article, "Bringing Peace and Happiness to the Psyche Ward" appears in the national publication of NAMI Voice Newsletter, Spring Edition, 2013.

Schizoaffective Disorder occurs in 1 and 100 people. It was first diagnosed by Dr. Jacob Kasanin in 1933. Many people who have it are diagnosed with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression because it is difficult to understand its symptoms.

Schizo-affective disorder is a hard disease to tackle when societal pressures seem to dominate your routine, yet the sheer process of overcoming the stigma of this disease is complicated but workable.r

A Gay Man’s Lifer Sherry Joiner Living A Life With Schizo-affective Disorder Lecturer and In Our Own Voice Speaker for NAMI As I sit a gallery in Portland, Oregon, where my paintings hang with other artists, I’m looking at a photo. That’s me in the denim jeans and white laced blouse with my brother’s arm around my shoulder. He has a dusky Afro and a wide Portuguese smile. A happy picture. I remember stroking his soft brown curls when he was a baby. I sat him on my lap and he stared into my eyes with his bright blue eyes, grabbing the strands of my red hair with his tiny hands.r

I was painting from a picture of a lady on a swing on a warm Spring’s day. It was a blend of impressionism and realism, and I was overcome by the feeling of peace and tranquility as I painted it. It reminded me of all the times I lectured at the psyche ward and gave a meditation exercise. I hoped that the power of meditation would reach the audience with the same effect as did the lady sitting in the swing, meditating in a calm place.

When I was a child, daisies and dandelions were my favorite flowers. We lived on a dead end street that ran between the sprinkled lawns of our duplex, and the mod Edsel dealership that lined its shiny, fancy, cars in a row. The pavement was dressed with seismic cracks and yellow dandelions peeking up toward the sky. I remember I would walk to the edge of the pavement, bent from the waist, arms stretched out behind me. Then leaned forward, made a big O with my mouth, drew a gust of air through my lungs and blew out a 'puff' ball.

Imagine yourself sitting in a movie theater chair with a tall bucket of butter popco and big cup of ice-cold Coca Cola, maybe stealing a nacho or two with your sister or friend next to you, chatting away about your day’s events – who sent you an email or a text or whatever makes you happy. You might be at Carmike Hickory 8 Theater in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, watching “Mad Max: Fury Road,” or in the Lafayette Louisiana Theater laughing at a comedy “Train wreck.” Maybe at the Aurora Theater in Aurora, Colorado, taking in “The Dark Knight Rises.” You are being targeted by a killer.

I grew up in the small city of Roseburg. Officially, I moved to Roseburg to its rolling green hills, from Salt Lake City, where I used to float in the Great Salt Lake when I was 10. In my 4th grade, I, and other students, participated in Roseburg’s Centennial where we dressed up like Sacajawea, Lewis and Clark, Patrick Henry, and famous pioneers who had made their names in Oregon History. I wore my curly red hair in ringlets unde eath a bonnet made of pink- flowered material, cardboard, and ribbons, and slipped into sliky pantaloons that my mom had made for me. The style of the day.
