About two years ago, one of my science-fiction clients started a podcast series. Every week he would put a new chapter of his book on audio, and upload it to iTunes and MySpace. He had a tremendous following and I really admired his form of promotion, but I thought it would be too difficult and expensive for me. Wrong! Podcasting is simple and affordable. And it can be an effective way to get the word out about your book because you are offering free content, which people love. How do you make a podcast?

Some writers are under the misguided notion that they can press the F7 key in a Word document, and most of their spelling and grammar errors will magically disappear. This is not so, as many of us have learned the hard way. Not only is the spell-check unable to correctly identify words that are misspelled, but also it often suggests incorrect grammar as well.

Those who are looking for sensationalism and all the pomp and glory that go along with being a rock god may be disappointed in Clapton: The Autobiography. Some people think that Eric Clapton came across as shallow in this memoir and that his behavior over the years, particularly to women, was ...

Some women are attracted to bad boys. They may be alcoholics, married men, or men with an attitude like Stanley Kowalski in Streetcar Named Desire, or James Dean in Rebel without a Cause. The worst type of bad boy is a convict or an ex-con and sad to say, there are many women who fall for ...

Recently I wrote about women who were attracted to the wrong men, and I discussed one woman in particular that I knew who was drawn to a criminal. I received so many comments about that short article that I decided to write a slightly more in-depth sequel, asking the question “Why?” Why do ...

Many of us make mistakes in our lives. We hurt other people and disappoint them. That doesn't make us bad people. We're all works in progress. We're bound to let each other down from time to time. That’s why it’s so important to learn how to say “I’m sorry,” and to accept other people’s ...

As a copy editor, I’ve edited almost 50 full-length nonfiction books and novels, as well as numerous short stories, blog posts, query letters, book proposals and even Hollywood biographies. Time and time again, I see the same mistakes made by both first time and seasoned writers. These include the misuse of apostrophes, inability to identify a run-on sentence, and an overreliance on the fallible spell-check. Today, I will cover the most notorious problem, which is with apostrophes.

If you think that being a rock 'n roll star is glamorous and lucrative, think again. It's hard work with long hours and no paid holidays or vacations, according to Canadian rock legend Greg Godovitz. Bargain-basement accommodations on the way up leave much to be desired. And if you want to know where your money goes, you'd better have solid financial management or a clean, sober mind, both of which were lacking in Godovitz's rise to fame. But he doesn't regret any of it and provides all the gritty details in his stunning autobiography, Travels with My Amp.

Aaron Sorkin earned a stellar reputation as the producer of "West Wing," an idealistic TV show about a smart and sophisticated American president with good ethics and equally good policies. Having high expectations for a Sorkin production, I was disappointed in his current release, "The Social Network." "The Social Network" is the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the co-founder of Facebook, which has 500 million users worldwide and was estimated to be worth $25 billion at the time of the movie's release. That's no small feat for a 26-year-old entrepreneur. How did he do it?

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Sigrid Macdonald

As a writer, I love to help wannabe writers realize their dream. I act as a book coach, assisting new writers to clarify their ideas, organize their thoughts, flesh out characterizations, dialogue, plot resolution and background details. Some people simply need confidence whereas others require direction. In nonfiction manuscripts, I work with clients on structure, flow, up-to-date references and consistency.

As an editor, I'm available for basic copyediting, which includes the elimination of misspellings and grammatical or punctuation errors. I also look for repetitious words and generally polish sentence structure. For more detailed projects, I do a structural edit and occasionally, I rewrite projects.

I love people and everyone's work is unique to me; I treat it as if it were my own because I know the feeling of handing one year's worth of work over to a stranger! It can be unnerving.

I'm affiliated with Dragon Moon Press, a science-fiction publishing house in Alberta and I often refer clients to various publishing companies, depending on the type of material they write. I'm also savvy about self-publishing, and enjoy guiding and directing writers on the entire publishing jou ey from hiring a graphic artist and layout person to choosing the best publisher. And I have many contacts in marketing, which helps tremendously.
