Steve Nash Quick Facts

Briefly, I am not a self-help guru of any kind. Instead, my aim is to help people realise that they are their own best self-help guru! And I intend to do that via the tips, articles, videos and all-round wisdom found at the Self Help Collective website.

Galileo Galilei said it best, in my opinion...

"You can't teach anybody anything, only make them realize the answers are rnalready inside them."

Yes, experts serve an overall purpose but all should be advocating self-reliance as much as possible.

In my very humble opinion! :-)

People are strange, don't you think! They worry about this and they worry about that. And then 'this' and 'that' usually never ends up happening. But whilst they were worrying about something that didn't happen, a few more minutes or hours or days of their lives passed by. As Homer J Simpson would say: "D'oh!" And it's the same when it comes to people's top 10 fears, really. So just why do people have these fears - why are these fears so common, and what do these fears say about us?

Setting goals is important, for all of us. If we didn't set goals - formerly via using SMART goals, or informally via something as simple as a to-do list - then we simply wouldn't get anything done in our day. Or our week. Or our year. I guess setting goals at work is controlled via your boss (or your customers), but in setting personal goals *you* have to be the boss (or you have to be your customer, so to speak). So what's the best way to set personal goals, then? Well, I think that personal goal setting requires that you set big goals and break them down into smaller ones.

Can there be any greater fear than fear of public speaking? And the crazy thing about this fear is that very few of us ever get to do any speaking in public. Just the thought of our deepest fear is enough, it seems, to mean that we will do almost anything to avoid facing our public speaking fear! But why is this, exactly? What is there to fear about talking in front of people? It's not as if public speaking puts your life in danger or anything, after all! Well, this is another of those learned fears, believe it or not.

How can fear of failure be such a big problem to so many people? And why do we all worry so much about failing that we engage in all kinds of self-sabotaging activities - many times subconsciously - just so we do not begin something that we may not successfully complete? Well, this is another case of one of those fears that are learned as a child, alas. In the beginning, children learn to talk, learn to walk and explore their world of 'constant new' without trepidation and without fear.

How do we solve a problem like fear of commitment, or commitmentphobia? Well, we begin with understanding what the problem is all about, I guess. And, to give the answer away right at the beginning of this article, it's about fear of the unknown. Yes, some might argue that it's also about fear of rejection, too - and that is true to an extent - but fear of commitment is much more about not knowing what's around the corner.

Are your goals SMART goals? I mean to say are your goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-based? If not, then you may not get very far in what you set out to do today, this week or this month. SMART goals are the 'what?', 'why?' and 'when?' of goal setting. That is, what do you want to achieve? Why do you want to achieve it? And when do you want to achieve it by? And if you don't put your goals in such a framework you really are likely to forget your goals (eventually) and replace them, instead, with a new set of goals.

Fear is everywhere! It's in our own lives; it's in the lives of others; and it's in our children's lives and our parents' lives. And, to a large extent, how successful we are in overcoming fears - fear of commitment, rejection, intimacy, fear of failure and even fear of success - is how successful (and happy) we are in life. So learning how to overcome fear is very important. To us all. So how to do so? Well, overcoming fear is actually very simple. It only involves one step, and that is the act of facing fear.

One of the strangest fears is the so-called fear of success. Fear of failure is understandable - it 'hurts' to fail, to have your limitations revealed - but to actually fear that you'll get what you've been working for all your life... Well, it just sounds daft, doesn't it? Well no, actually. Fear of success is very real and very serious, and quite often the worst thing about this fear is that it goes unnoticed. And that's because the person 'suffering' from it seems to be happy and seems to be successful, but they could have so much more!

Life is for living! And it doesn't really matter what's going on in your life right now - whether joy or despair or boredom - this is still true. Obviously a life filled with 'good stuff' seems to be a life that is easier to enjoy, I agree. But any life - yours or mine - really can be enjoyed, ...

Life is amazing, isn't it? Whatever stage you're at - teenager or retiree, in work or out of work, single or married, parent or grand-parent - life is sure to throw you the odd curve-ball or two, to test you out a little. And when life turns sour (or sweet!) then it's always great to be able to ...
