I was in the corporate world for over 18 years, 14 of which were with the same company where I climbed the corporate ladder from Data Entry Clerk to Office Manager. My responsibilities varied, but what I loved most was empowering my team to be their best and teaching my team new skills to help them achieve higher positions and feel good about themselves.
A life-long dream of mine was to be a stay-at-home mom so when I found out I was expecting my first child, I was ecstatic. I notified my manager that I would be leaving after mate ity leave and expected to do transcription from home to help out the household financially. In researching work-at-home jobs, I came across Virtual Assistance and thought, “Wow, this is like managing, except I can be my own boss and help clients grow their businesses!”
I studied everything I could get my hands on about being a business owner and about being a virtual assistant (VA). I joined numerous VA forums and organizations. After three months, I realized I was learning lots, but NOT making any money whatsoever. Thanks to a colleague and friend, I came into contact with a Life Coach who offered two 30-minute sessions to me. I decided, “Why not?” I was pleasantly surprised and this Coach helped me realize I didn’t really have a target market and helped me realize who I truly wanted to work with.
When this Coach and my colleague launched a VA business building program, I just knew I needed to join. Once I did, I went from zero clients to a full practice in four months (at that time, a full practice for me was 50 billable hours per month!).
Applying the skills I learned from the program, and learning and modeling after the Coach once I became her VA (yes, she loved me so much that she hired me to be her VA!), I was able to control the success of my business. My business was built entirely on referrals and I didn’t need to do “marketing” to get clients. Clients were drawn to me because of my skills, personality, authenticity, and they could tell I was from the heart. Things got a bit too busy, so I let some clients go and slowed my business down.
I then had a second child, and during the first month after her birth, my husband and I talked and we knew I could grow my business to a point where it would support our family financially. We decided he would quit his corporate job and stay home to take care of our two very young children.
What happened then? I built my business to singularly financially support my family within four months. Yep, that’s right. And how did I do it?
- I went back to business building foundations.
- I’m honest.
- I’m transparent.
- I’m caring and nurturing.
- I learn new skills so that I can help my clients utilize the best services out there to grow their business.
That’s my secret. I don’t do anything fancy.
I’m just me.
I took some time to analyze my life and business and realized what would make me most happy is to help other Moms achieve their dream of being with their family while doing what they love and making a living at it. Help other Moms achieve their dreams of staying at home. Of launching a successful business. Of balancing life and business. Yes, Mom, you CAN have it all. And I want to help you. So I became a Mompreneur Mentor so I could truly focus on helping Mompreneurs launch or grow their business. I also have a couple of clients where I support them as their VA (I just love them like they are my family so I can’t let them go!). Between my two businesses, I’ve found that I have such a wonderful balance between work and life, that I’m truly happy. My husband and I get to stay home and watch our two children grow up. We get to watch them play and take their “firsts.” My husband has gotten involved with my business as well and has learned many new skills to help our businesses grow and thrive.
And we couldn’t be happier!
And YOU can too!

Take the Guilt Out of Being a Work-at-Home Mom
Why do mothers often feel guilt when it comes to their children? As moms, we feel like we aren’t giving our child the attention they deserve. We make a decision about something and then think twice about it. We dedicate time to spend with the kids and then we think about our business. We work on our business and think about our kids and what we should be doing with them instead. Guilt surrounds us and we are regularly thinking, “Did I make the right decision?”

Stay in Touch with the WHY
Whether you are starting an online business, or already have one, staying in touch with WHY you want to be a work-at-home mom is important to your business and life balance success. It’s easy to lose track of why you want to work-at-home. Many moms choose to work from home to stay home with the children – to have an active role in their upbringing. Running an online business is a lot of work and if you lose the why, you will quickly see you enthusiasm for your business disappear. You’ll find yourself unhappy, questioning your decision to be a work-at-home mom and thinking you’re a bad mom.
