Werner Erhard
Werner Erhard is an original thinker whose ideas have transformed the effectiveness and quality of life for millions of people and thousands of organizations around the world. For nearly 40 years he has been the creator of innovative ideas and models of individual, organizational, and social transformation. His work has been the source of new perspectives for thinkers and practitioners in fields as diverse as business, education, philosophy, medicine, psychotherapy, developing countries, conflict resolution, and community building.
Werner Erhard has created new ways of seeing things in areas where progress has stalled or where breakthroughs would make a significant difference. A majority of the Fortune 100 companies and many foundations and governmental entities have used his ideas and models. More than two million people around the world have participated in the public, corporate and academic programs and courses he has created.
Werner Erhard is largely self-educated, albeit with tutoring from some important thinkers of his time – Richard Feynman, Michel Foucault, Humberto Maturana, Sir Karl Popper, and Hilary Putnam, to name a few. Professor of Philosophy, Michael E. Zimmerman said of Erhard “He had no particular formal training in anything, but he understood things as well as anyone I’d ever seen; and I’ve been around a lot of smart people in academia. This is an extraordinary intellect I saw at work”.
Werner Erhard has been recognized:
- Fortune magazine’s 40th Anniversary issue (May 15, 1995), in examining the major contributions to management thinking, recognized Erhard’s ideas as one of the major innovation of the last few decades for their unique impact on corporate culture, introducing into business the idea of and a model for employee empowerment.
- For his humanitarian work around the world, in 1988 the Mahatma Gandhi International Foundation awarded him the Mahatma Gandhi Humanitarian Award, citing “…your notable effort to end the starvation and hunger suffered by millions throughout the world, and for drawing broad public awareness to the value of integrity in our everyday lives."
- The distinguished social scientist Daniel Yankelovich had the following to say about the results of his study of participants in The Forum, one of the public programs created and developed by Erhard: “Several of the study’s findings surprised me quite a bit, especially the large number of participants for whom The Forum proved to be ‘one of the most valued experiences of my life’. This is not a sentiment that people, especially successful, well-educated people, express lightly. More than 7 out of 10 found The Forum to be one of their life’s most rewarding experiences. To me, this suggests that it addresses many of peoples’ most profound conce s; how to improve their personal relationships, how to be a more effective person, how to think productively about their lives and goals.”
While he may have been originally known to the general public for applications derived from his models including The est Training and The Forum of the 1970s and 1980s, currently Erhard commits his time and intellectual effort almost exclusively to the academic world. Some of his recent research, writings, lectures, and courses can be found on his author page in the Social Sciences Research Network – http://ssrn.com/author=433651. He is writing papers, most recently on the topics of integrity, leadership, and performance, and he lectures and teaches from time to time at various academic institutions.

Life, Living and Winning the Game
From a lecture given by Werner Erhard in San Francisco on May 23, 1973 Living is really pretty simple. Living happens right now; it doesn’t happen back then, and it doesn’t happen out there. Living is not the story of your life. Living is the process of experiencing right now. Thinking about right now, figuring it out, perceiving it, arguing, reading about or believing anything about right now – none of these produce any certainty about living.

Favorite Quotes & Thoughts from Werner Erhard
-
We can discover another possibility: living in a way, now, moment to moment, that makes a difference to life. We discover that as human beings we can live in a possibility instead of in what we have inherited, that instead of just being a human being because we were born that way, we can declare the possibility of being for human beings. This is the work of transformation: bringing forth a breakthrough in the possibility of being human.
-
You and I want our lives to matter. We want our lives to make a real difference—to be of genuine consequence in the world. We know that there is no satisfaction in merely going through the motions, even if those motions make us successful, or even if we have arranged to make those motions pleasant. We want to know we have made some impact on the world. In fact, you and I want to contribute to the quality of life. We want to make the world work.
- Life is a game. In order to have a game, something has to be more important than something else. If what already is, is more important than what isn’t, the game is over. So, life is a game in which what isn’t, is more important than what is.
-
Happiness is a function of accepting what is. Love is a function of communication. Health is a function of participation. Self Expression is a function of responsibility.

You don’t have to go looking for love when it’s where you come from.

Time Magazine, March 7, 2011 issue describes Werner Erhard:
"The American obsession with Transformation isn’t new. It’s about as old as the nation. In the 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson preached about tapping into the “infinitude of man.” Norman Vincent Peale was an early bestselling self-help author with The Power of Positive Thinking in 1952. But it was Werner Erhard who created the first modern transformation when he founded est seminars in 1971. It’s a tribute to the power of his central concept that more than 20 years after he sold his ideas to a group of employees who went on to create Landmark Education that Landmark is still the natural first stop in any transformation tour."
The first est Training was held at the Jack Tar Hotel in San Francisco in October 1971. Original est staffers include Gonneke Spits, Jack Rafferty and Laurel Scheaf. Gonneke Spits remains a close colleague of Werner Erhard to this day.
The New York Times, November 29, 2015, writes the following about Werner Erhard,
"Harvard economist Michael Jensen. Dr. Jensen, who is famous in financial circles for championing the concepts of shareholder value and executive stock options, had taken a Landmark course in Boston at the suggestion of his daughter, who mended a rocky relationship with Dr. Jensen after taking the course herself.
"'I became convinced we should work to get this kind of transformational material into the academies,' he said, adding that he considers Mr. Erhard 'one of the great intellectuals of the century.'”
"In fact, Mr. Erhard casts a fairly long shadow in the culture at large. His influence, wrote Lucy Kellaway in the Financial Times, 'extends far beyond the couple of million people who have done his courses: there is hardly a self-help book or a management training programme that does not borrow some of his principles.'"
In their groundbreaking paper published by The Center on Capitalism and Society, “Putting Integrity Into Finance: A Purely Positive Approach,” Werner Erhard and Professor Michael C. Jensen discuss their positive model of integrity that links integrity and personal and corporate performance. The creation of this model reveals a causal link between integrity and increased performance. Through the work of clarifying and defining what integrity is and it’s causal link to performance, this model provides access to increased performance for private individuals, executives, economists, philosophers, policy makers, leaders, legal and government authorities. The Center on Capitalism and Society brings together leading scholars in economics, business, finance, and law to study capitalist institutions, their effectiveness, and their weaknesses in order to get some answers to such basic questions about capitalism – its working, its dynamism, and the instability it may cause, its inclusiveness or lack thereof and its role in a democracy. http://capitalism.columbia.edu/journal/12/1
