It is always an honor when I am asked to speak at graduation time. The opportunity to share my thoughts of encouragement as I look into the eyes of tomorrow’s champions is exhilarating, to say the least.
Here is a summary of my message to this year’s crop of graduating seniors:
“As you turn the page on the next chapter of your life, I’d like to offer you three powerful words of advice.
First: Attitude. Albert Einstein once said that the most important decision we make each morning is to decide whether we believe we live in a friendly or hostile universe. The positive thoughts you send into the world can come back to bless you a thousand-fold. You can’t love the life you live if you don’t live a life of love. Be kind, for others who will cross your path are carrying their own burden.
Second: Gratitude. Imagine that everyone and everything in your life was suddenly taken away. Everyone has a reason to say thank you. Take time to make a mental list of your blessings each day. What you do have is more important than what you think you need.
Also, learn to forgive. Grudges and resentment are darkness that will dim your future. Every minute you spend lamenting the sorrow of the past is a minute you will never get back. Focus on where you want to go, rather than where you’ve been. You wouldn’t think of driving your car by staring at the rear view mirror.
Third, (and perhaps most important): Servitude. There is no greater joy, nor purpose than that of serving others, asking nothing or little in return. While many may tell you that it’s a “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’ kind of world,” it is not. When you help your fellow man, you inspire them to do the same for someone else in need. The true measure of character is doing something for those who can do nothing for you.
And so, my dear graduates, I urge you to do something each day to grow and use your talent to make a positive impact; appreciate your gift of life; and serve, serve, serve.
When you focus on the needs of others, it gives God more time to focus on you.”
