5 Tips to Gain Control of Your Life

Despite all your attempts to achieve work/life balance, do you still feel out of balance? Is work overtaking your life? Or, are family issues keeping you from being productive on the job? No matter where you fall on the balance scale, there are things you can do to make everything work together. This article covers 5 tips that you can use to gain more control in your life.

1. Change the way you are doing things when life is not fair.
When bad things happen to good people, we always ask, “Why me?” or “Why them?” But realize that no one is immune to loss. Therefore, reframe it and ask, “Why not me?” Looking at the “why not” is true empowerment and helps tip the scale in your favor.

2. Being driven is part of the success equation. The other part is making time for yourself.
Success requires that you work hard and play hard. If you don’t give yourself time to rest and recharge, then you’re going to drive yourself into the ground. Therefore, always remember that making time for yourself is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. In fact, the more time you give to yourself, the more productive you’ll be professionally.

3. Make sure your needs are part of your day.
Attaining balance means you’re able to juggle all your roles while still having fun. That’s why you need to schedule time for taking care of your personal needs each day. If you consistently give yourself little pamperings, when you do have a bad day or run into challenges, you’ll have the emotional and mental reserves that you can call upon to see you through the tough time.

4. Humor is a survival skill that is part of the balance equation.
Yes, humor is a skill. You have to train your brain to look for humor everywhere. Even those people who are “naturally funny” work every day to maintain their sense of humor. When bad things happen (and they will) you can maintain your balance by finding the humor in any situation.

5. Change the focus in your camera.
Whenever a setback occurs or something tries to pull you off balance, look at your challenge through a second pair of eyes. Too many times we focus on what we think we’re seeing. Change your focus and you’ll find a new perspective. There’s always a second right answer – you just have to seize it.
