This canine's temperament is very erratic. Dog owner's with this kind of dog often give the excuse of "he isn't always like this." This kind of behavior should not be accepted and is in fact very dangerous. Don't think your dog is just being "protective."
Aggression Due to Fear
A man's best friend with fear aggression shows a significant lack of confidence. This kind of behavior includes a timid, insecure and scared dog. This kind of animal will bark at the door, bark at the phone, bark at any other people or animal that approaches him. This kind of dog will snark, bite, show teeth and be down right temperamental when they feel threatened or in danger. This is not a behavior that a dog will outgrow. If it's not dealt with early on, it will only get worse.
Painful Aggression
Dogs are not so different from us when it comes to pain tolerance. Your beloved pet who may be recovering from surgery, or a broken limb or any form of injury may show signs of aggression. Dogs can't tell us when they are in pain, so they may resort to snarling and biting if anyone gets near him. It is really important that you seek medical help for your dog.
Territorial Aggression
This kind of aggressive behavior is exhibited when this dog feels if his space is threatened by an intruder. This furry friend may even growl and lunge at you. These kind of dogs will growl and bark when someone is at the door. When taken out on walks, this dog may feel threatened by other people or any other animals that approach him. If he feels his space is being violated, he will be a threat to anyone that comes near him.
Aggression Towards Other Dogs
Aggression between dogs is a very common occurrence especially in households with dogs of the same sex. These dogs are exerting dominance over one another. These dogs are very territorial and competitive with each other.
Possessive Aggression
Do you have a little furry pet that growls when he is eating or playing with his favorite toy? If so, you have yourself a little possessive dog. This dog will snarl, bark, bite, and show teeth when any other person or animal comes near anything he thinks belongs to him. This can be anything from his food bowl, a favorite sleeping area, a toy or maybe even another person. If your dog does this and is well beyond the adolescence, than this is a behavior that YOU reinforced.
