Success can be elusive and often feels like a moving target. What's more is that it can also be a matter of perspective. Your opinion of being successful is different than your friend's or coworker's definition. But what is most important to know when actually talking about creating success is: "How will you know you have arrived?"
In order to be able to answer this question you need to first create a focus on reaching success. To help you create this focus here are 6 questions that will get you launched well down the path! Each of these questions represents a critical component of creating your focus on becoming successful in a way that works best for you.
1. Where are you now?
In order to be successful or have any meaningful measure by which to compare it you must first know where you are starting from. Getting this starting point not only gives you a measure but it helps you decided what to do. In assessing this starting point be as explicit as possible. Define what is important to change by clearly identifying the relevant goal in terms of what is true right now. From the clear definition of what is true now you will eventually be able to extract what needs attention.
2. What are the results you crave?
Now that you know where you are you need to be able to clearly articulate where you are going. Without this explicit definition of success it is easy to wander through the process aimlessly and never accomplish anything significant. But in order to clearly define success you need to do start with a simple change in perspective.
As you answer this question let go of what you "think" you can accomplish and decide what you "want". If you want to really be and feel successful try using the word "crave". With this simple shift in phrasing you will open up a whole new mindset that will allow you to release your perceived limits and your focus to become even more powerful.
3. What is your core motivation?
In order to maintain your focus on creating success you must know your reason for wanting this result. Without proper motivation, once again, it is easy to wander and get lost. What is worse is that if you don't clearly understand your motivation you might even end up with a result that is contrary to what you really crave!
When assessing your core motivation ask yourself these questions: "What is important about this result?" "What do I want to be different in my thoughts or emotions?" "How do I feel about what is true now?" With these questions you will be able to clearly articulate your core motivation.
4. What do you need to achieve those results?
In this question you are simply assessing what is missing. What tools do you need? What skills will be necessary for success? What changes must occur? How will I accomplish these results? Continue asking yourself these types of questions until you fully understand what will be required to achieve the success you have defined for yourself.
5. What is preventing that?
Everyone gets stopped or stuck once in a while. Sometimes these blocks are internal and relate to your emotions, state of mind, belief systems or fears. Other times these roadblocks are exte
al and have to do with societal standards, practical limits, exte
al judgments of others, unforeseen challenges or reasonable and predictable problems that may arise. The more explicit you can be in defining what will prevent you from achieving success the better you will be able to stay focused when they do happen.
6. How will you get there?
With this final question you begin to define the path you will take to reach success. What often works most effectively is a set of goals that will get you started on the path. Since it make take you months, years or even decades to reach the level of success you crave it is important to make sure your goals are manageable and achievable in a reasonable amount of time. In order to keep your focus as strong as possible your basic progress goals are best kept in the 6-12 month range. Focus on what you need to do for the next step while continually remembering the big definition of success
As you put all these answers together you will discover a new level of clarity and focus that you may have never experienced before. With this focus you will likely find that your ability to succeed increases as well. Whatever your definition of success is having a clear understand and a clear focus on how you will get there is crucial to actually doing so.
By putting this information together you will be able to not only be more successful but you will also be more satisfied with the results. Regardless of your definition of success it is easy to see that increased satisfaction makes it infinitely better!
