Are You Serious?

I’m just wondering. You keep saying it but are you serious? You say you want to be happier. You say you want to lose weight. You say you want to stop letting people walk over you. You keep claiming that you’re going to start living your dream. You keep swearing over and over that you are going to change. You’ve cried about not ending up in this same place again. You’ve even started creating pretty little memes about all the wonderful empowering things you say and sharing them with your networks.
But are you serious?
I’m asking because no one really believes that sassy little note you posted about a brand new day any more than you do. It’s just that you are not DOING anything that would suggest you believe it — so we don’t believe it. Actions speak louder than words.
You’re not serious and if you are honest with yourself, you know it. If you were serious, you would be doing things differently. If you believed the temperature today was going to be 30 degrees below zero, you would not be dressed in that outfit you have on right now. You complained about that exact same circumstance just a few weeks ago. You called your friend about that same problem last year. The names or faces change, but that “person out to get you” keeps showing up in too many areas of your life. Listen, its not them, it’s you.
If you truly believed things were going to be different this time, you would be showing up differently. Instead you talk about it like saying it makes it so. It doesn’t.
Now don’t get me wrong. I know in your heart you would really like to make it happen. The reason you keep saying it is that you want to will yourself into believing something you really don’t believe. Unfortunately, it just doesn’t work like that. No matter how many times you say it, if you have a strong belief that doesn’t agree with what you are saying, you aren’t going to act like its happening. You and I both want you to have what you want. You and I both want you to achieve that dream. You and I both believe it is possible.
You and I also know when you put your mind to it, no one and nothing can stop you from making it happen. You are awesome in that way. Yes you are. That is something people who know you really admire about you. You are determined and things work out well for you when you decide to create something wonderful.
Except this particular thing has you completely stuck, frustrated, and clueless about what to do next. Have you noticed that your strong determination normally shows up when you are focused on doing for someone else? It’s only when you are trying to do something wonderful for you that you don’t act like you are serious. Why is that?
If you choose to, you can be more serious than you have been up to this moment. You can start right here.
How are you getting and staying serious when it comes to doing something wonderful for you? What can you learn about how you help other people that might serve you in accomplishing this thing you say you want to do? If you were working to make it happen on behalf of someone else, how would your approach change?
Step up on behalf of you’re most powerful purposeful self. Begin moving as if you are doing it for someone else. Take a stand for who you are when you are at your best. Then you will know, you will see, and you will feel that you are serious. Watch how serious you can become not just about saying it but actually doing the things that matter to you. Try it!
I’m so serious!

Human Diversity in Organizations, a Hidden World of Opportunity
As a seasoned Diversity and Inclusion practitioner for a Fortune 100 company, who has lived & traveled in several countries and continually engages in the marketplace with Diversity related issues, I see good inclusionary practices by many… on the surface. The end results however, indicate that all too often noble objectives fall short of leveraging the inherent contributions of most leaving a quiet brooding behind, or sub par productivity gains. Government and Business entities both espouse Diversity and Inclusion policies to foster goodwill and equal representation.
