A big part of setting up a home-based business involves marketing your business and building a clientele. Your marketing efforts boil down to either an investment in money or time. When starting out, you are likely on a shoestring budget so a good approach is to devote time learning about low-cost and no-cost marketing strategies. One low-cost marketing strategy is to become the perceived expert in your field.

Word-of-mouth can become your primary method of advertising when you are the perceived expert at the type of work you do. When I started my freelance writing business, most of my clients came from word-of-mouth referrals. It was important to be acknowledged as an expert in my field so I invested my marketing budget in skills training and professional certification programs. This effort paid off in the form of client endorsements and testimonials which resulted in more referrals.

It might take awhile to build your reputation so as soon as you have a solid business idea, start telling everyone you know what you are doing. Soon people will start to associate you with your business. To develop expertise in a particular field, there are numerous online tutorials that can help get you started on your skills development. To get a “real world” view of your field, use your networking resources to find people who are doing similar work and do informational interviews. This is a good way to learn things that often aren’t explained in books or tutorials.

Noted author and public speaker, Patricia Fripp is a powerful advocate of taking advantage of every opportunity that comes along. In her presentations, she always encourages the people in the audience to pursue lifelong learning. Education should be as much a part of your marketing budget as your advertising and promotional efforts.

One of the best ways to be recognized as an expert is to have a clearly defined niche. If you are too general about what you offer, you risk blending in with your competition. However, if you focus on a particular niche, people will have an easier time recommending you because they know specifically what you do and who you do it for.

One of the best investments as a new home-based business owner is to establish yourself as an expert in your field. That way people will feel more inclined to refer you to their friends and acquaintances. You don’t need to wait until you are an expert before you start and operate your business. But it’s a good idea to continue learning and strengthening your knowledge and skills.
