When faced with the news that your boyfriend wants to take a break you want a proven method for working things out and getting back to the business of building a future together. But, where can you begin to make this happen?
Give him his break.
Take a step back and assess the situation. You can't force him to change his mind just like you can't make him love you. This means that you are going to have to give him his break. It doesn't mean that you have to give up on him or the future you were trying to build together.
Don't panic.
Men often really want to take a break when they ask to take a break. While some women may believe this is a way of letting a guy down easily most men don't think along those lines. When they say things are going to fast or becoming too complicated and they'd like a break that's usually what they mean. The problem is women take these words for what the words would mean coming from them and go wild with panic. From that point on it becomes a self fulfilling prophesy.
Keep your cool throughout the process and you might find that the break really is short lived.
Be critical.
This is a time when you want to critique everything. You need to examine your role in the relationship, his role in the relationship, the goals you're setting together, and the goals you are each setting independent of each other. Are you falling short, meeting expectations, or getting things done with flying colors. Where do you see room for improvement and what improvements can you make? Will these changes be enough to turn the relationship around?
Outthink him.
Bide your time and keep on going while you wait for him to come around or pluck up the nerve to call it quits. The worst part about a boyfriend taking a break is waiting around for him to make a decision. It can feel as though you're in a constant state of limbo until you find out what his final decision is going to be. Spend this time planning your next three moves in each potential situation. Make sure that you try to think like him in order to anticipate what his move is going to be.
Don't wait around for a miracle to happen. Do what it takes today to make sure you're the first thought on his mind today.
