Business Travel Tips
Written by Gerald Anthony
Some of us love to see the world at the expense of our companies, while there are others of us who don’t enjoy the travel experience so much. When we come home from a long trip home we love to seek the things that provide the most comfort for us. It may be a nice hot beverage, or perhaps a long warm shower. No matter what it is, it is our natural instinct to seek comfort after a long trip.
If you are part of a committed relationship of any sort where at least two members share a household, you may have forgotten one important fact about your business trip. Although some may view it as a small detail, in reality it is not. In fact, it is not an ‘it’ at all. It is the other member(s) of the relationship. While traveling, your housemate(s) or partner(s) also have to pick up additional responsibilities while one part of the team is gone. When you come home, they are also looking for comfort.
Just like any good team, sit down together and make a plan for responsibilities and comforts for business travel. Don’t let your team be torn apart from frustrations that stem from poor communication. “I just finished a 10 hour flight. I’m to tired to deal with ‘you’ right now!” “I’ve been picking up the kids from school while working an extra shift for two weeks while ‘you’ were gone. I need a break!” Both are legitimate conce
s, but an assumption is made that the other can read the partner’s mind. Before leaving for business (especially for newlyweds), sit down for a few minutes and discuss histories and expectations. Relationships need communication to survive.
Next time you come home from a business trip be prepared to have that hot beverage there waiting for you. Just make sure you are prepared to relieve your partner of some responsibilities.

After all, Juliet would have plunged a premature dagger into the heart of her romance with Romeo if she hid in her room rather than go out on her balcony. The end of Sleepless in Seattle shifts from "awww" to "aw, no" if one of the two main characters skips the trip to the Empire State Building. As these examples from fiction show, making yourself
