How many times have you wished you had inner strength, willpower or self discipline?

How many times you felt you did not have enough persistence and inner stamina to follow through with what you were doing?

Most people are not are not born with inner strength, but it can be developed.

Inner strength consists of willpower, self discipline, self control, persistence, detachment and the ability to concentrate. In this article we will focus on two of the ingredients, willpower and self discipline, which are important and essential tools for success in all areas of life, and which can be learned and strengthened like any other skill.

Willpower is the inner strength to make decisions and follow them, take action, and handle and execute any aim or task, regardless of inner and outer resistance, discomfort or difficulties.

It bestows the ability to overcomes laziness, temptations and negative habits, and to carry out actions, even if they require effort, are unpleasant and tedious or are contrary to one's habits.

Self discipline is the ability to reject instant gratification or pleasure in favor of something better or a higher goal. It manifests as self control and the inner strength to stick to actions or plans in spite of obstacles, difficulties or unpleasantness.

It is one of the pillars of success and power, and bestows the inner strength to focus all your energy on your goal, and persevere until it is accomplished.

Both of these skills are required for the efficient handling of all activities and decisions. They are required for doing a good job, for studying, building a business, losing weight, bodybuilding, maintaining good relationships, changing habits, self improvement, meditation, spiritual growth, keeping and carrying out promises and for almost everything else.

How can you develop willpower and self discipline?

There are simple and effective methods for developing them. Start by refusing to satisfy unimportant or unhealthy desires, and by doing actions that you usually postpone or resist doing. By overcoming your inner resistance you develop inner power and strength.

Refusing and rejecting useless, harmful or unhealthy habits and desires, and sometimes intentionally acting contrary to your habits, sharpen and strengthen your inner strength. By constant practice your inner power grows, just like exercising your muscles at a gym strengthens your muscles. In both cases, when you need inner power or physical strength, they are available and are at your disposal.

Here are a few exercises to strengthen your inner powers that use ordinary day-to-day activities:
- Avoid reading the newspaper for a few days.
- Take a walk a few times a week, even if you prefer to watch TV or lie in bed.
- Climb up the stairs instead of taking the lift.
- Park you car a little farther away from you destination, so that you have to walk.
- Now and then choose not to watch one of your favorite TV programs.
- Refuse the desire to eat unhealthy food.
- Read a book that is useful and informative, but which you find boring.

These are just a few examples to show you how you can develop your inner strength. Such exercises add to your inner strength reservoir, which you can use whenever you need it. These exercises develop your inner muscles, just like lifting barbells develops your physical strength.

I received a text from a fellow motorcycle rider friend of mine, Joe, on Tuesday December 7th, 2010. Sadly, the message read a kid named Carlos with a GSXR 600 just died from running a stop sign at 17th and Hackberry in McAllen, Texas. Kid? Oh no! It is always awful when one of your fellow riders goes down and gets hurt, a tragedy when they die. When I read the words ‘kid’, my heart bled even more. The poor relatives and friends that have to survive through the insurmountable pain of losing a son, brother, nephew, or friend, well, I can’t even put into words.r
