A jumping puppy may not seem like such a big deal but imagine a jumping dog a year down the road. Can be a little problematic huh? Imagine, every time you have company over, they have to deal with a full-grown dog constantly jumping on them. Don't think it can happen? It can and will happen if you don't nip your puppy's behavior in the bud fast!

It doesn't matter what kind of dog you have or the age, but jumping is a bad habit your dog needs to break. Think of the inconvenience it will be every time your dog jumps up and stains your clothes, or having company over and dealing with the embarrassment of having your dog harassing them with their jumping.

What if you had a big dog with a jumping problem? Think of how many people your dog may accidentally knock to the ground. Your dog could end up hurting themselves or the person their jumping on. Not something you want to risk now is it?

So what exactly can you do to prevent this from happening? Well, here are a few tips you can use to stop your puppy from jumping.

First keep in mind when your puppy is jumping, your dog is trying to get attention. Whenever you puppy does this and you pet or acknowledge this behavior with a smile, you are telling your puppy that this kind of behavior is acceptable and that you puppy should do it more often if they want your attention.

Even if you're telling your puppy "NO", what your puppy is really hearing is "YES" when you greet them in one form or another.

Next, to break this habit, do not give your dog attention as soon as you walk through the door. In fact, ignore your dog until he's calm down. Refuse to look at your dog or even pet them. This will be hard but think of it as tough love. You are helping your puppy to grow into a well-mannered and healthy dog that is socially acceptable to others.

Don't yell at your dog when he is jumping. Your dog has NO IDEA why you are upset at him. All your dog understands is that you are not happy with something but cannot connect your response to his jumping.

When your dog finally calms down, then you can reward him with praise and a treat. Whatever you do, do not reward him while he is still jumping. It will only encourage the jumping more.

Soon enough your dog will understand that he gets the attention he wants when he isn't jumping and is in a calm state. Your dog will connect that by being on all four legs, he can get more desirable results instead of standing on his hind legs.

Teach your dog basic obedience commands. Commands like "sit" and "stay" will help him learn that he sitting or staying if he is jumping. This will take practice. Practice makes perfect so keep at it.

If your puppy is jumping on your guest, make sure you use the "sit" and "stay" commands. Once your dog can follow these commands, you will not have to worry about your poor guest being inconvenienced by your puppy, no matter how cute he is.

Like with any other skill, it will take practice. So make sure you consistently reinforce the "no jumping" rule. Soon enough, you can have people over without your puppy constantly bothering them with their need for attention.

Also keep in mind that your dealing with a very young animal. Telling your dog to "stop it, that's not nice you silly furry dog" will not have any meaning on your dog. Your dog can only connect a few words to a certain actions. Some owners thing they can speak rationally with their dog, that's is a waste of time and more of the benefit for yourself rather than your dog.
