When dogs growl, they are trying to express their emotion. It's usually out of fear, feeling threatened, anger, aggressiveness, and showing dominance. If your dog is a constant growler, growling is a behavior that should never be tolerated. This issue needs to be addressed immediately to prevent more problems in the future. Here are some things you can do to stop this unruly behavior.
Make sure your dog understands that growling isn't accepted. When your furry pet growls, tell your dog "NO" or "STOP". Try to make it clear to your dog that it's not okay.
When you and your pet are playing, your dog may want to growl, especially if you guys are playing tug of war or are wrestling. When your dog does this, tell her NO and stop playing. This way your dog will associate all the fund and play is over whenever she growls.
Does your furry friend know your the alpha dog? Better question yet, are you making it clear you're the alpha dog in the house? When your dog is exerting his dominance, it may be because he think he's the alpha dog. To show your dog who's the boss (you don't have to get mean), don't let your pet sleep with you on your bed (only at the foot of the bed), limit his time on your couch, don't allow or tolerate his impatience when it comes to feeding time. Meaning, if your canine friend growls, barks, or jumps before you're about to feed him, do not give him his food until he calms down.
If your furry pet is growling, he may just be a very timid dog. In order for your pet to get comfortable with new situations. Socialize your pet Take your dog out for walks, meet new people, and see new places. By introducing your pet to new things, the more comfortable he will get and the need to growl will lessen. Taking your canine friend out for drives in the car is also another great way to introduce to your dog new sounds and smells.
If your furry friend likes to growl AND show teeth, as in biting or snapping, then getting your dog a muzzle when you go out for walks may be a good idea, use it as a precaution when meeting new people and other animals.
Another important thing to keep in mind is to pay attention to your pet's triggers. Do you have kids that like to play rough with your dog? Your dog may feel as if certain boundaries are crossed and may just be trying to defend himself and get his point across. Respect goes two ways, teach others in your family to respect the dog and your dog will less likely feel like he has to be on the defense mode all the time.
Keep in mind that fear is contagious. If you feel threatened or sending of vibes that you are on edge, your pet will feel it as well. Dogs can sense when your upset, mad or uneasy. You may not realize your behavior could very well be affecting your dog's growling. Do you yell and scream a lot? This kind of behavior may also intimidate your dog and put him on edge. Create a safe environment for your dog physically as well as mentally.
