- When tempted to interrupt, take a sip of water
n- Use listening CPR to resolve conflicts-clarify, paraphrase, reflect and review
n- Listen with a purpose. This prepares you to listen
n- Use a combination of open and closed questions
n- Control your emotions. Identify your trigger points or emotion words
n- Practice being alert and attentive
n- Reflect feelings to show understanding and empathy
n- Prepare the environment for optimum listening by eliminating physical distractions
n- Listen for hidden meanings. What is the speaker really saying?
n- Tune into body language and intonation patterns
n- Keep an open mind. Do not judge the listener's appearance or style
n- Get enough rest to be physically and mentally able to listen
n- Take a few notes to keep you focused
n- Use mnemonics to aid memory retention
n- Mentally summarize the main points
n- Respond verbally and non-verbally with direct eye contact and facial expression
n- Evaluate evidence
n- Don't change the subject
n- Listen openly. Do not mentally rehearse your answer
n- When you hear the words, 'in summary' pay particular attention
