My daughter and I spent a day visiting my dad and we went to one of the neighbors we’ve known for years for a visit. His daughter and 17 month old twin grandsons were visiting and we had a wonderful time with them. The grandpa is a very outgoing, hospitable Greek man who pretty much almost insists whoever comes has to stay and eat. We had another appointment and couldn’t but he was telling me how he was grilling pork kabobs. Not wanting to be rude I didn’t say I didn’t eat pork, just that we didn’t have time to stay for a meal. His daughter, however, point-blank told him not to give her boys any pork – she doesn’t feed them pork.
He then began telling me how lean it was and healthy and asked if I ate pork. I told him then that I don’t. He was sure it was healthier than red meat. I explained a little of what the article referenced above talks about – that the quality of the food and how it is raised is the most important factor. I also avoid pork because it is one of the foods the Bible tells us is unclean. God created these bodies and He always knows best how to care for them.
Our friend was truly shocked to learn that the way conventional animals are raised, fed and slaughtered could make such a huge difference in the quality of the food they provide us with. It always shocks me that so many people are unaware of this since I see articles and information about it everywhere. While the article recommends avoiding animal protein altogether I am not a vegetarian or vegan. But I am extremely careful about the quality of the meat, poultry and dairy I purchase. However, although I include clean protein at every meal, the bulk of my meals are comprised of non-starchy, organic, leafy greens and other vegetables.
