What’s gonna happen next? Do you know?
Yeah, me, either.
But aren’t we cute? We think we do! We all hold the belief that we know what is going to happen next. Chances are good that the next thing will be similar to the current thing, but that’s just a change, it’s not knowledge.
We have different ways of handling that uncertainty. We learned how to handle it when we were little ones, from our adults. Sometimes, we change our ways, often we don’t. Some of us don’t really think about it, and just go along, one foot in front of the other. Some of us learned to be terrified and try to control the future, trying to manipulate everyone around them through a wide variety of behaviors like intimidation or guilt. Some of us find the unknown a little bit exciting, and wonder with some delight what will happen next.
How do you handle it? Is the idea of your future exciting? Terrifying? Boring?
Whatever we think of as the future is just fantasy on our parts. Since we are making it up, I like to make it up fun, and interesting. And enjoyable.
You may have noticed that I love old saws. One of my favorites is, “Plan plans, not outcomes.” It is a more general version of “don’t put all your eggs in one basket,” without even pre-supposing eggs or baskets!
When I am thinking about the future, I love to use Creative Questions (c). My actions will influence the future, even if they don’t actually determine it. So I ask questions like, “Why do things go my way? Why am I so lucky? Why am I aware? Why do I enjoy life? Why do I choose?”
When I ask Creative Questions, I keep my “vibrations” high. Keeping my own frequency high makes it easier for me to attract high-frequency events, and other high-frequency people. It makes it easier for me to enjoy the future as it realizes into the now.
When I ask Creative Questions like, “Why is my appointment so gentle, easy, and fun?” I set myself up for that kind of appointment. When I am thinking, “oh, this is going to be awful, they are going to hurt me, I hate this,” the underlying creative question is something like, “Why is my appointment going to crush me?”
Since it’s all just fantasy, perhaps you might think about having nice fantasies rather than walking nightmares.
Here is a visual for you. Imagine that your thoughts are like a spinning top. High-frequency thoughts keep your top spinning quickly, strong and steady. Low-frequency thoughts let your top slow way down, wobbling and unpredictable, and kind of scary.
Surrendering takes practice. Letting go is not the usual M.O. for most of us, but, like so much, it’s really worth the practice.
Why do I trust and let go?
