Thyroid hormone is an incredibly powerful force in your body. Every cell in your body has a receptor site for thyroid hormone. 27 millio
Americans suffer from thyroid related illnesses, with the majority being women.
What exactly is the Thyroid gland, and what does it do?
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland that is located on the front part of the neck. It is responsible for producing thyroid hormone and is very sensitive to any changes within the body. When you hear metabolism, think of the thyroid. This means that it is in charge of gaining and losing weight. When our thyroid is under functioning it causes our metabolism to slow which leaves us with excess weight that won’t come off.
My Dr. says that my lab tests look fine, why do I still feel the same way I did before I started taking medicine?
The story commonly goes like this: You have a thyroid lab marker out of the “normal” range. The conventional medical model is to prescribe a thyroid replacing hormone.
Synthroid (a prescription thyroid hormone) is the 4th most commonly prescribed drug in the United States. The goal in prescribing the drug is to get the lab numbers back in the acceptable range. If symptoms persist after your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level is normal, then additional drugs are prescribed to address the symptoms. The problem with this is that treating the isolated lab marker such as TSH does not get to the CAUSE of your thyroid dysfunction. Chances are you symptoms improved for a short time but you are back to feeling the same even though your labs are “fine”.
What is causing my thyroid to be underactive?
There are a number of potential causes for you poor thyroid function. These include: a weak immune system, gut infections, blood sugar imbalances, adrenal issues, and hormone imbalances.
I’ve never heard of Hashimoto’s disease…..
Hashimoto’s disease is responsible for 90% of hypothyroidism cases in the United States. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disorder, which means that your body’s immune system is attacking your own tissue and cells. There is no model in conventional medicine to manage Hashimoto’s disease. Sadly, this means that if you have hypothyroidism there is 90% chance that you are not being treated properly. You are most likely on a thyroid replacement medication while your thyroid continues to lose function.
The Bottom Line…
There is no one size fits all approach when it comes to supporting your thyroid correctly. Every individual requires a different protocol based on their current functional lab findings and symptoms. Your thyroid dysfunction needs to be addressed as well as the root cause. You need guidance in getting your health on track so that you can have a life filled with energy!
