It's Aliiive! Beware of Frankenfoods!

Tomatoes spliced with the DNA of flounder and shellfish. Potatoes spliced with the DNA of the wax moth, and potatoes that make their own internal pesticides! Corn and soy genetically engineered to tolerate high quantities of pesticides, so the weeds die but the crop doesn't (and YOU eat all chemicals!). Commercial pork is even altered with DNA from human beings! Genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (BGH) injected into dairy cows to increase milk production results in the need for antibiotics, thus high levels of pus is in your milk...
These are all real examples of what's going on in the world of genetically modified organisms. And these items, plus thousands more, are on your grocery store shelves right now. More than ever, the importance of buying organic should be stressed to consumers.
So what if my food is being genetically engineered? What real risk does it pose?Valid questions... let me elaborate.
Genetically modified products, because they are living (unlike chemical pollutants) canreproduce, migrate, and mutate. Once released into the environment, it will be virtually impossible to recall these GMOs back to the laboratory. This could lead to irreversible, devastating damage to the ecology. Also, genes from genetically engineered crops with insect and virus resistance could be carried by pollen, insects, wind, or rain and may find their way into weeds, for example. Or might harm birds and other animals if eaten.
Scientists are human, and human error is bound to occur. Researchers have found that genetically altering plants to resist viruses can cause viruses to mutate into new, stronger forms, or forms that can attack other plant species.
No one is regulating genetically engineered organisms or testing for their safety! There just aren't any systems in place for it. There have been fatalities due to GMOs in dietary supplements, and occurrences in other products as well. And what about food allergies? There are so many people with symptoms but no known causes (ie. swelling, itching, asthma, acne, digestive issues, etc). You may be allergic to shellfish, but didn't realize that the GMO tomato you bought had been spliced with shellfish DNA causing common allergy symptoms. You would never know the cause of your symptoms, though, because there are no labeling requirements on GMO foods!
Vegetarians, vegans, or those following strict religious dietary plans may unwittingly consume material from animals, including humans! Without regulation or safety testing, health risks will only be discovered by consumer (you!) trial and error.
To avoid genetically modified foods, the best thing you can do is buy organic. The USDA organic label does not allow GMOs, the use of pesticides, or other additives or chemicals. This is for whole foods only (vegetables, fruits, grains, etc.) HOWEVER, if you buy processed foods labeled "Organic", they are only required to contain 50% organic ingredients. That means that only half of the product may actually be organic, which also means that the other half could contai
GMOs.
