Ladies In The Men's Room

A funny thing happened at the end of Abraham's Art of Allowing Workshop I recently attended in Burlington, Massachusetts.

I headed over to the restroom along with half of the rest of the crowd. As usual the men had a short wait while the women were piled up in a line outside the restroom doors.

While I was finishing up I thought I heard a female voice in the men's room talking about sneaking in. Wouldn't have bothered me much, even if I was in the middle of doing my business.

But I looked around as I was leaving and noticed there was only one other man, and he was washing his hands. n

It brought me back to an incident from several years ago in New York City when my father and I guarded the men's room while a group of desperate ladies used it and relieved some of the long line to the women's lavatory. Sure, we alienated a few men in the process, but it was a small price to pay (considering two of the ladies were my mother and daughter).

So as the last man left I offered the restroom to the assembled ladies. The relief on their faces was palpable. Six of them headed right in. n

Five minutes later (and one man who took the delay with good humor) I had made a few friends for life. My friend Linda (who was one of the grateful women) and I headed back home. n

Rules. They serve us well. Until they stop serving us.

Then it's OK to change them...at least temporarily.

Got any ways of doing things in your life that aren't serving you anymore? n

Do you know anyone who can help you change things around - even for a little while? n

Can you do the same for someone else? Maybe see something they aren't, and help them open their eyes a bit? n

Wishing you a happy heart and an empty bladder,
Larry
