Lemons; They're More tha Sour!
Written by Courtney Findlay
The healing properties of lemons have been known for centuries, from growing in Mesopotamia in 722 BC, to being transplanted wherever a citrus tree will grow!
From Mesopotamia and Babylon to Sicily and Europe and eventually North America. Some of the historically reported benefits include prevention against plagues in the early Middle Ages, a prevention against malaria in the 1600's, a cure for scurvy in the 1700's, and a remedy against diphtheria's fevers in the 1800's.
Today, we are aware of it's other beneficial attributes, such a being rich in vitami
C and B and potassium, assisting the body's abilities to expel toxins and fight all infections, known for being antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antiseptic and an antacid. Well known for lessening ulcers in the mouth and tongue as well as treating inflamed or diseased gums and sore throats. Considered a tonic for the liver, a wart remover, a diuretic and laxative, and an astringent for oily skin. Although it tastes sour, it actually counteracts acidity in the body, normalizing PH levels, and helping to relieve arthritis and rheumatism. Even the amazing clean scent of lemons can dispel depression and indecision. But it doesn't stop there, below is short list of remedies worth trying. These include:
Acne: Paint the pimples with freshly squeezed lemon juice at bedtime, leave ove
ight and rinse off in the morning.
Hiccups: Slowly sip some pure lemon juice.
Indigestion: One half glass of lemon juice with one half glass of water and a touch of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), and sip.
Nosebleeds: Insert a piece of cotton wool soaked with lemon juice into the nostril.
Restless Legs Syndrome: Lemon juice in hot water before bed.
Caution: Lemon juice can irritate sensitive skin, and do not use before sunbathing as citrus juices can cause a photosynthesizing on the skin (can alter the skin's pigmentation). Lemon essential oil is the oil that is expressed from the peel of the lemon and is more potent than the juice.
Indigo Earth notes: I've used lemon with honey or raw sugar in hot water for years for colds and flu. Use a few drops of stevia if you are avoiding sugar. We use organic lemon juice which has a cleaner fresher scent and taste than the non-organic varieties. It does cost more but a little lemon goes a long way. Consider lemon essential oil for any antiviral and antibacterial needs, such as naturally cleansing the air in a home where someone has the flu or preventing the introduction of viruses into the home. Simply heat a few drops of lemon essential oil in a small pot on the stove.
