Your senses support your well being. Listen to the Wisdom of Your Body

As humans, we experience the world through our five senses. Although each sense responds to stimuli in its own way, the brain is the common factor which organizes and interprets the sensations we experience. People born without one of the senses who later develop that sensual capacity may have great difficulty interpreting what they perceive. For example, people born blind and later able to see will have difficulty knowing what they are actually seeing. Our eyes play tricks on us when we watch a magician’s slight of hand. A person who has been blind may not be able to differentiate foreground from background, edges from lines, or fragments of perception into whole and complete images.

What happens to us when one of our senses no longer functions as it should? It has been observed that as men age they tend to lose their capacity to hear sounds in the higher range of their long term partner or wife’s voice. Imagine how frustrating that can be for the woman. A mother, and often both parents’ hearing can be acutely attuned to the sound of their infant or child in the other room or even at a large distance.

We differ greatly from one another in our sensual capacities. Some people, known as super tasters, are born with a much greater number of taste buds and are much more sensitive to the nuances of food. Others may have a heightened sense of smell, readily recalling and being mroe easily afffected by both pleasant and unpleasant odors.

Although we need all of our senses to function, touch is the earliest sense and the most essential for living. Our skin is actually our largest sense organ. Infants that are not touched do not thrive. Elderly people who are not touched often become depressed and ill.

Although our senses are continually bombarded by both internal and exte
al sources of stimulation, our brain mediates what we focus on, pay attention to and actually perceive. And our gut sensations, sometimes referred to as the “second brain,” can lead us to multidimensional memories of an experience, both pleasant and unpleasant.

When we perceive the world around us and within us while accessing the full capacity of each of our senses, we open the door to potential healing. We feel the sensations, we notice our thoughts, we recall early experiences and are able to make life changing connections between the past and the present. With total sensual aliveness we can heal emotional, physical and even spiritual blocks and struggles

Imagine what a pleasing world it would be if all of us were fully sensually alive. We would often stop to marvel at all the natural wonders surrounding us. We would look, listen, smell. taste and touch the many textures in our environment. We would enjoy sharing that sensual wonder with our family, friends and most intimate partners. And most of all, we would be able to appreciate the joy of just being alive, regardless of our current circumstances.
