Ayurvedic practitioners recommend liver detox with the use of turmeric. It is vital that a liver detox be done at least once yearly to ensure a healthy functioning liver, whose primary role is to process and remove toxins carried in the bloodstream. This very important organ produces over 13,000 different chemicals and 2,000 various enzymes used in the body. In peak condition, it works fast. It filters up to two litres of blood per minute, with liver enzymes breaking apart the structure of toxic molecules to reduce their toxicity.

Poor diet, allergens, pollutants and fatigue can cause your liver to become congested, toxic and sluggish. When that happens, it fails to function optimally. If you consider that the liver as the centre of vitamin, mineral, protein, fat, carbohydrate and hormonal metabolism, then it is not hard to imagine that dire consequences would result with an impaired liver.

One of the ways that the liver eliminates toxins is to make bile. Hence, an increased bile flow is beneficial in liver detox. Turmeric helps increase bile flow making it a liver cleanser that could rejuvenate the liver cells and recharges their capability to break down toxins.

Turmeric is known in Ayurvedic medicine as the king of spices. Its principal chemical component of turmeric is curcumin. The bitter spice helps cleanse the liver, purify the blood, and promote good digestion and elimination. It stimulates the gallbladder for bile production, and scavenges free radicals. The whole herb turmeric contains lower doses of curcumin, and is used when healing requires the application of volatile oils.

As a herbal remedy for cirrhosis of the liver, curcumin speeds up the liver detox process. Curcumin prevents alcohol and other toxins from being converted into compounds that may be harmful to the liver. It can reverse the adverse effects of excessive iron consumption on the liver.

Other than being excellent for liver detox, curcumin has powerful antioxidative abilities that combats against viral infection, cancer, and arthritis. It has powerful anti-inflammatory properties and yet does not bring about any unpleasant side effects of drugs that reduces inflammation. Turmeric has been used for skin cleansing, colour enhancement and food preservation, amongst other uses.

Before you do a liver detox with turmeric, do check with your healthcare practitioner. There are certain situations that turmeric is not advised. If you have a congestive heart disease whose cause has not yet been identified, you should not use turmeric or curcumin. Also, refrain from using turmeric over extended periods of time, as it can cause stomach distress. Turmeric is also best avoided if you suffer from painful gallstones, obstructive jaundice, acute bilious colic, and/or extremely toxic liver disorders.
