Once you have decided to start your own business in network marketing, you must also make some inner decisions that will affect whether or not you make it past your few months.

You must make a personal, conscious decision to succeed. I realize that this sounds cliche', but this is crucial. You must not accept failure as an outcome and you must not ever, ever give up. This is true whether you have just purchased a brick and mortar business, an online business or a home-based network marketing business. If you begin with an escape mentality, you will find a way to excuse yourself from real success when the going gets difficult. Network marketing can be extremely rewarding and financially lucrative but it comes with a lot of challenges.

Your first order of business should be to set some goals in writing. What specific income or sales numbers do you expect to see within your first month? Your third month? Your sixth month? Take the time to break down the numbers into realistic monthly goals. How many personal development books will you read commit to reading each month? How much money are you willing to allocate towards advertising and promotion of your new business on a monthly basis? Are there some skills that need to be learned or developed? Get enrolled immediately for professional training. Clearly stated goals will help to propel your business forward, even when you begin to feel overwhelmed, tired or burned out.

Next, you will need to re-order your life to integrate with your new venture. In network marketing, you will need to be present on numerous training calls to learn about your company, your products and your marketing system. This means that you may need to invest in a different phone plan with additional long distance minutes. You will also need training in lead generation and sales techniques. Some skills can be learned by doing, but the most valuable information will come from your successful upline sponsors and mentors. What can you learn from them? What steps do they recommend for quickly building your downline? Can they recommend professionals to assist you?

Lastly, don't forget to invest in yourself. When getting started, it's natural to assume that you need a better computer, a faster printer, or an upgraded cell phone plan. Your people skills and mindset are extremely important as well. You must remember to budget for personal development and coaching, especially if you do not have previous experience with personal selling or internet marketing. Investing properly in yourself will greatly enhance your odds of success in your network marketing career.

Many years ago I was sitting in a big hall, with a lot of people, listening to a famous speaker, salesman, and marketer named Larry Thompson.
