Have you ever wondered if seeking help with a mental health counselor/therapist/life coach would benefit you? Many of us think of counseling as only for those who have a mental illness or someone you reach out to only in a crises. Truth is, a therapist or a personal coach can go a long way to help you get what you want in life by helping you remove the barriers that keep you from it.
Sometimes the simplest solution is not something that you are aware of. Therapists and coaches help you to raise your awareness so that you can change and can also help you with designing a plan of change.
Awareness is the first key to changing anything. Therapy or coaching brings things into your awareness so that you can change them.
My three "A" formula for helping someone to change is:
A-awareness,
A-accountability, and
A-action.
Therapy or coaching can help with all three. It can help you bring to the surface what you need to explore that might be standing in your way, help you to "own" it, and to identify what action is needed to change it.
A good way to know if you will benefit from therapy is to ask yourself the following:
Am I where I want to be in life?
If not, what do I want to have different?
What are my needs and am I meeting them?
Do I need help defining what I need and want or where I want to be in my life?
Do I have what it takes to make personal changes by myself?
What have I tried that didn't work?
Do I have some old hang-up that says "it's not ok to ask for help"?
Depending on what your goals for change or and whether you can move forward to meet them alone first determines your possible need for a coach or a therapist.
Is fear standing in the way of you asking for help? Then get help! Chances are fear is getting in the way of many other things in your life as well such as intimacy in relationships, pursuing the career you want, or getting to the weight or fitness level you are desiring! Believe it or not, this is the most common reason for not reaching goals. So seek a professional and see where you can take your life.
