I'm usually writing about nutrition and food and telling you why one thing is better than the other. But I want to touch upon something else... what food becomes at the end of the line; your mindset, mood, outlook, energy, confidence, and wellness. For many, you might be completely disconnected from what you are eating on a daily basis. Your criteria might be: cheapest, most convenient, comforting or maybe you don’t choose at all. Rather you create meals without really thinking, based solely on routine. On the flip side, perhaps you are very conscious of what you buy and try to do the “right thing” but everything is so “hard”, “overwhelming”, and “confusing”.
Maybe these self-talk scenarios sound familiar….
“Well they said on TV that this brand has 40% more fiber. We must need fiber if they’re advertising that.”
“My friend said she lost 10 pounds just by eating this, so I should buy it, too.”
“This one says fat free, so I’ll get this one. But some fat is healthy. Is it this kind of fat?”
“I’ve heard saturated fat causes clogged arteries, so I should buy this instead. But this one is processed. Which is better?”
“Ugh… I have another cold. I’ve heard there are safe and natural remedies out there, but I don’t know what they are or which ones work… so I’ll just buy this medicine instead. It’s easier.”
“No matter what I eat, I can’t get to a healthy weight. Even when I eat next to nothing that doesn’t work either! I’m doomed.”
“So gluten is bad now, right? Gluten is in grain products, so I won’t buy grain products any more.”
“My sister is a vegetarian. Maybe I shouldn’t buy this steak. Why doesn’t she eat it?”
“If I eat this, will my skin break out?”
“I better get some GasX for after my dinner date. I wish this didn’t always happen.”
I could go on and on, but you get the picture. We all have this voice inside our heads that tries to reason, tell us whats right, and tell us what not to do… The problem is, what is right for one person is poison to another. Learning to listen to your intuition, your own body, and paying attention to the cues your body sends you will teach you a lot. Acid stomach, indigestion, sleeping problems, and frequent colds are not ok, and not normal. Those are symptoms; expressions of a nutrient imbalance. When we are properly nourished with everything our cells need, we no longer feel fatigued, or lack a sex drive, or crave foods… When the body has what it needs, it doesn’t have a need to cry out for help. Instead its in a place of balance, ease, and efficiency. It can do its work, killing off unhealthy cells, removing toxins, breaking down our food, and supplying our cells with life. When our bodies work properly, our energy is suddenly freed up to pursue our passions, follow our dreams, and live life to its fullest (as cliched as that sounds).
Every cell that determines our mood, energy level, state of mind, outlook, quality of sleep, brain power and more is fueled solely by the food we choose to eat and how we process that food internally. The most important word there is choose. It is hard to choose the quality of air we breathe, water we drink, or environmental toxins we are exposed to. But we have the power to choose what we put into our mouths. We can educate ourselves about how our food is planted, grown, cared for, harvested, transported, and stored allowing us to make conscious knowledgable choices. That is a lot of power we have! I have personally felt the power of choosing energy over fatigue, laughter over depression, ambition over lethargy, and confidence over uncertainty in the form of food.
So when you are listening to what everyone else is saying, even me, take it all with a grain of salt. Some advice is useful for you, some maybe for your brother or sister, and then other tidbits might be helpful for your mom. Finding out what your biologically unique body needs can be a difficult and confusing process, however. So whenever you are ready to ask for help, do it. The information you’ll learn about YOURself is invaluable. Once you have even the slightest experience of what its like to feel well vs. unwell, you will be surprised how easy it is to make the healthier decisions when it comes to your eating habits. All it takes is a glimpse of the sun to feel its warmth.
