The Zhangs, from China, were competing in the final of the free pairs skating championship. Early in the routine Zhang Dan crashed to the ice in a brutal fall that drew gasps from the crowd. She limped off the ice with her partner, doubled over in pain, their quest seemingly finished.

However, 5 minutes later, after gathering her composure, she asked if they could continue and the referee said yes. The Zhangs stepped back to the ice to perform what was a flawless routine. When they finished, the entire crowd cheered their passion and perseverance with a standing ovation. And in that golden moment, they earned awarded Silver.
