Is courage truly disappearing from today's world? Can you remember what courage meant to you as a kid growing up in modern society. Did you define it in the physical or moral sense? Did you ever take a stand on a particular issue? There's a great reason why most heroes all through history have usually been characterized as persons of courage in some shape or form. Courage has usually been in limited supply through generations of history, most of society simply flows with the tide. Hence when some people go against the flow, they often stand out and are lauded for their great courage. However courage is something that you are born with. After all your chances of making it into this world were very slim, the competition was fierce.
As a baby you probably showed automatic courage to try and walk after repeatedly failed attempts. However you developed the courage not to give up after failure, but to keep trying till you got it. You also showed automatic courage after falling off your bike to get back on again. As a kid you were probably eager to explore new possibilities every day, so when exactly does it most likely stop. Perhaps, as we progress through the schooling ranks, it becomes a necessity to fit in with everybody else. It's easier to run with the crowd and maintain the status quo, realistically speaking, what could you really have done to stop bullying whenever you witnessed it. One could definitely make the case that our automatic courage dissipates over time as we wrestle control of our mind's dashboard.
If certain people didn't have the courage to act or think differently, perhaps we would all still be walking around thinking the world is flat. What about the first person to dive into the water and swim. How many people around him or her warned of certain doom. Courage indeed means many different things to many people in all walks of life. One person's courage could be mistaken for cowardice in another culture. One could go on and list the numerous definitions or examples of courage that could be agreed upon by every culture, however it's far more important to learn to define it for yourself.
You are perfectly capable of courage. You have experience, you for sure did it as a baby. Courage is commitment to lifelong learning, daring to push the boundaries of widely accepted views. Challenge yourself to define courage in your situation. What do you need the courage to do? Is there something or someone holding you back you need the courage to confront. Whatever the case may be, remember to take into consideration that courage has a great track record of advancing civilizations. Courage was a key ingredient when our ancestors, the early Homo Sapiens decided to venture off outside their familiar surroundings and aren't we all glad that they did. Courage will work wonders for you too. Best of luck.
