I love to speak in front of all sizes of groups of people, and will tell anybody that I do. It’s when I feel the most alive in my purpose, where I feel I make the biggest difference and when I feel the most at ease with people. It’s like my lifeblood, and yet, I resist it in subtle and obvious ways.
Have you ever started a new exercise program, or spiritual practice, been inspired with an idea for a program or starting a business that set you on fire - how about New Year’s resolutions? - and a few weeks later barely remembered it? If so, you know what resistance is.
Have you had a book to write, a show to hang, a recording to make ... Or even a phone call to make, an article to read, an oil change to schedule, a check book to balance and just not done it? If so you know what resistance is.
To cut to the chase, resistance is at work a good deal of the time. If I may sum up all the reasons that we play small, wait until something is different, hold ourselves back from our greatness, for simplicity’s sake I’ll put all that under the heading of resistance. The more important something is to us, more often than not, the greater resistance we have toward it.
Yes, we have disempowering beliefs at work in our subconscious mind, wounds to be healed and self-confidence to restore. Each of these is valid, important and life changing! Working in these areas can free us up to do our important work, to be our greatest self and to live our dreams.
And yet, there will always be another piece of resistance that we must face.
I have come to see everything that gets in the way of expressing my best self, or that slows me down from what my soul is “calling” me to do, from what I deeply desire, or from what I know must be done as resistance.
That can be hesitating to make a decision, having an extra snack in the afternoon when I have a call I feel uncomfortable making, or going to my email when I need to be writing. It can be pushing through tiredness at the end of the day rather than closing the doors to my office. And it can be those days that are becoming rare when I let go of my morning bike ride.

Six Simple Ways to “Resist Not” Your Greatness
Resistance is not the problem, really. The problem is being unaware of all its disguises and listening to them instead of listening to the spirit within.
It might help to know that everything that keeps you from being and doing what makes you feel fully alive comes down to resistance.
It helps when it surprises you less and less when resistance shows up. It helps when you can laugh about it, as I am now while writing this article. It helps to “just do it,” whatever “it” is. It helps to forgive yourself when you don’t. And it helps to “resume” what “it” was that you didn’t “just do” as soon as possible.
1) Know that everything that keeps you from your greatest good is resistance.rn2) Don't be surprised when it shows up.rn3) Laugh about it when you have a little distance from it.rn4) “Just do it,” even in the face of resistance.rn5) Forgive yourself immediately when you don’t.rn6) Resume as quickly as possible.
When you deliberately take action you activate your own personal power, and set all the positive forces in the universe into motion on your behalf!
