As someone who's spent more than ten years in the online business and started numerous internet ventures such as Webhostingology, I like to think I know a thing or two about managing a hosting server. Believe it or not, most of it comes down to a simple dilemma: should you opt for managed hosting or cloud hosting? In the former case, your host company – also known as the Managed Service Provider – will take care of your server's operations and performance. With cloud hosting, the task of managing your host will fall to you and/or your employees. Many website owners struggle with choosing between these two very distinct options. Now, there's one thing I've learned during my business ventures – technologies only become more complex as the years go by. Look at real-time disaster recovery. Sure, companies have plenty of tools available to accomplish this task, but the required skill level and time commitment are a different story. If managing your infrastructure in-house becomes too big of a bother, you should probably consider outsourcing your hosting services to a third-party provider. Let's take a closer look at what this actually means for you and your business, shall we? Managing Your Server In-House This method has an immediately obvious benefit – overhead cost savings. That's just one side of the equation, though. Performing this task successfully has a steep price in terms of human and technical resources. For example, let's say your in-house IT team is working at adapting the cloud. First, your experts will have to organize a thorough examination, as well as move your apps and data to the cloud in the most efficient way. While doing so, they'll have to find a way to deal with legacy systems and compatibility issues that surround them. Things get ever more complicated if your company is a BFSI entity or a healthcare, as there are all sorts of security and compliance checks connected to them. If you have the right crew and the right resources at the right place, this can still be a plausible and lucrative method of doing business. If not, do yourself a favor and take a closer look at the following paragraph. Outsourcing Your Server The biggest danger of doing everything in-house is that your IT team can only process so much data before it becomes overwhelmed. As your business is growing and the servers are becoming encumbered, you probably won't be able to scale things accordingly due to the inflexible infrastructure. As constantly scaling your IT team is far from a productive exercise, your best option would be to utilize fully managed services. Keep in mind, however, that every organization has a unique structure. In order to help your company, the Managed Service Provider will basically need to become another part of your business' infrastructure. The good news is that third-party providers are very adept at gearing their procedures and technologies to your requirements. Conclusion To sum up, this is a choice you should make only after considering the needs of your specific organization. As every company is different, finding the right hosting solution is very much an individual process. The best advice I can give you is to step back and take a look at the things you want to achieve, as well as the time frame required to complete them.
