Soar on the Wings of Imagination with Your Child

The left, rational side of your brain gets a lot of use. Balancing a checkbook, buying groceries and washing the car all require a certain amount of focused brain activity. Not all of your life, however, needs logical interpretation. The right, creative side of your brain is the seat of your imagination. You use your imagination when you move outside of the linear box; when you create, explore and wonder what is possible. Most likely, your imagination was more active when you were a child and is less valued as you have gotten older. Be like a child again; open your wings and soar on flights of fancy with your child. Imagine. It could be just the ticket you need to move more easily from left brain to right.

TODAY at least once when your child expresses a desire, instead of rationally explaining why he can’t have it, give him his wishes in fantasy. If he wants to be with you and you have to go to work, perhaps you can declare, “Wouldn’t it be nice if we could spend every single minute of this day together, playing?” He doesn’t want to leave the swimming pool, you might say, “What if we lived at the swimming pool; would we sleep on the water?” He resists getting dressed and you say, “What if we never, ever had to get dressed and we wore pajamas all the time?” Giving your child his wishes in fantasy is a useful communication tool. It’s not for every parenting dilemma but is guaranteed to help you lighten a heavy moment.

This inspiration is from a purple card in the Bless You Mom-Conscious Thoughts for the Mothering Journey deck.
The PURPLE Bless You Mom cards are organized around thoughts of illumination and consciousness. They address the conscious choices we make each and every day of our parenting experience; and the deep soul connection that we have with our children.
