Social Allergies
Written by Gerald Anthony
“Ah-choo!” Springtime allergies begin to surface as the temperature becomes not just warm, but hot. We walk around for a period of time with itchy throats, red eyes, skin irritations and various other symptoms.
In our relationships with others, we also may find that there are certain experiences that we find ourselves allergic to. We can call these ‘social allergies.’ A social allergy is an experience that causes an immediate unwanted and involuntary reaction. Here are two ways to cope with social allergies.
1. Discover the problem and not the symptom. Whenever you find yourself in an experience that leads you to feeling of anger, depression, or frustration take note of the events leading up to this experience. Feelings are a reaction and not a problem. Study your experience and notice your symptoms or feelings.
2. Don’t be afraid to get an outsider’s perspective. A close friend, family member or a wellness professional can serve as a great new perspective on what experiences cause you to develop social allergies. There is a Chinese Proverb that states, “When on the mountain, it is hard to describe the mountain.” Sometimes, the event is too difficult to observe while experiencing it.
Don’t be afraid of enjoying the beauty of Mother Nature. Most allergies develop from lack of exposure to foreign items. The same holds true for social allergies. With experience and a little wisdom and control, a social allergy becomes something you can prepare for and learn to live with by taking a little medicine.

Dr. Venus Nicolino: You Have To Make Yourself Available To Find Good Relationships
The idea of making yourself more desirable by making yourself less available doesn't make a lot of sense when you think about it. After all, Juliet would have plunged a premature dagger into the heart of her romance with Romeo if she hid in her room rather than go out on her balcony. The end of Sleepless in Seattle shifts from "awww" to "aw, no" if one of the two main characters skips the trip to the Empire State Building. As these examples from fiction show, making yourself
