It is so easy to see why social workers have a difficult time maintaining morale and keeping a positive attitude under such stress full conditions. Day in and day out, they are asked to do more with less; they must improve quality of the services they provide while given less time and resources to do just that. Is it even possible to maintain a healthy, happy attitude when dealing with such a stressful environment?
Sure it is! It is possible to stay positive. It is possible to wake up each morning and look forward to going to work. It is possible to maintain high morale under difficult circumstances. In this article you will lea
7 things you can do right away to significantly improve your moral and attitude despite what is going on around you. In addition, having a positive attitude not only allows us to enjoy life more, it can improve our health and relationships with others.
Here are 7 tips to help you stay positive.
1. Decide to have a positive attitude. We are responsible for our own happiness; other people can’t MAKE us happy. We need to decide to make ourselves happy. This is wonderful because now we don’t have to wait around for someone else to do it for us.
2. Surround yourself with positive people. We become like the people we spend the most time with. When we surround ourselves with negative people, we become negative. When we surround ourselves with positive people, their attitude is contagious. When we think of the people that we spend the most time with, we need to decide if these are people who bring us up or bring us down. It is beneficial if we surround our selves with positive, life-giving people and insulate ourselves or avoid those people that are negative.
3. Use positive affirmations. A.L. Kitselman said, “The words ‘I am….’ are potent words; be careful what you hitch them to.” We need to replace our negative self talk with positive affirmations. Replace “I hate getting up in the morning” with “I am grateful for a new day.” Eventually changing our self talk will lead to the changes in our behavior.
4. Be very selective of the music and news information that you listen to. GARBAGE IN = GARBAGE OUT! We need to examine of we are feeding our mind with information that is helping us and not hurting us.
5. Create victories for yourself. “Small victories will lead to larger victories by changing our view of our own personal success and ability.”-K. Eubanks. When we want to complete a large goal, we need to break it into smaller goals that will ultimately lead us to that large goal. The same holds true for improving our attitude. When we take those small steps each day, they add up to changing our lives.
6. Get in touch with your spiritual source. “It is faith that breathes life into hope. It is hope that fuels a positive life giving attitude.” -K. Eubanks. Take the time to connect or reconnect with your spiritual source. Prayer, meditation and reflection can go a long way to fueling and recharging our attitude.
7. Don’t stop; never give up. Even when we have a positive attitude, we still have days when we don’t feel quite so positive. On these days, we may need to take some extra time to review the previous six tips and remember to not give in to the negativity around us.

Carlos Ramon - Observations From the Motorcycle Procession.
I received a text from a fellow motorcycle rider friend of mine, Joe, on Tuesday December 7th, 2010. Sadly, the message read a kid named Carlos with a GSXR 600 just died from running a stop sign at 17th and Hackberry in McAllen, Texas. Kid? Oh no! It is always awful when one of your fellow riders goes down and gets hurt, a tragedy when they die. When I read the words ‘kid’, my heart bled even more. The poor relatives and friends that have to survive through the insurmountable pain of losing a son, brother, nephew, or friend, well, I can’t even put into words.r
