If you are just waiting for an opportunity to bid adieu to your 9-6 job and set up a home-based business that will give you more time with your family, then start thinking medical transcription.
Medical transcription, which involves transcribing dictations by physicians and other healthcare practitioners into ready to use text format, is among the easiest to set up home based businesses. Not just that, there are several benefits of setting up a home-based medical transcription business such as:
1. Low start-up cost: You will not need to dig into your savings to make a huge investment into your medical transcription business. The cost of setting up this business is pretty low compared to some of the other home-based ventures. In fact, you may already own most of the equipment that you need to get started.
2. Flexibility: If there’s one thing that having a home-based business will provide you without fail, it is flexibility. You can choose when to work, how many hours to work, where to work from, and also who to work with.
3. Be your own boss: The best part about owning a business is that you are not answerable to anyone other than yourself. There’s no one looking over your shoulder or keeping a record of your“punch in punch out” timings. You are accountable for your own work. But that also means if you slip, you have no one to cover your back (good bosses are not a myth).
4. More time for family: Once you start your home-based medical transcription business, you’ll realize that you have much more time to spend with your family. How? Just by cutting down your commute to and from work, you’ll save plenty of time, which you can divert to your family or yourself.
5. Increased productivity: Believe it or not, working from home actually leads to an increase in productivity. We may not realize it, but a lot of man hours are lost in meetings at work, not to mention the loss in productivity on account of coffee breaks and idle chit chat sessions. Besides, the energy spent on commuting and dealing with office politics can also lead to low productivity. None of these problems will exist if you work from home and that will naturally lead to an increase in productivity.
Medical Transcription Business – How to get started?
Now that you know the several benefits of having a home-based medical transcription business, we’re sure you can’t wait to get started. Well, the first thing you need to take care of is getting qualified for the job.
Don’t mistake medical transcription to be a glorified data entry job because there’s much more to it than keyboarding. To be able to do this job well, you need formal medical transcription training. It’s only through a medical transcription training course that you will be able to understand and interpret medical terminology, which is such as important part of a medical transcriptionist’s (MT) job.
There are several ways of getting trained in medical transcription. You can get an Associate degree from a community college, which may take about two years and cost you a lot in tuition. A more affordable and convenient option is an online medical transcription training program that many career schools offer. It is also much shorter in duration as compared to a degree.
The second step to setting up your medical transcription business is getting the necessary equipment. Like we mentioned earlier, you may already have most of the required equipment such as a laptop or desktop computer, a fixed telephone line, and a printer. Since most physicians have moved to digital dictations, you will also need to have a reliable Internet connection at home and load your computer with appropriate software.
Once you have the necessary infrastructure in place, you need to decide on a marketing strategy. Set up a website, get business cards printed, take out ads in the newspaper, become a member of medical transcription associations, and use professional and social networking sites to spread the word that you are in business!
