What were you born to do? This is the question you need to ask yourself unless you want to settle for “just a job”. The soul searching process that leads you to your calling requires you to commit to three disciplines that work together —Reflection Research and Resolve which are all often overlooked in traditional job searches. If you are looking for work now or contemplating a career change in the future these practices can bring you closer to work you love.
Have you often thought that you would love to be able to get up in the morning, grab a cup of coffee, and not have to leave the house to begin your work day because you can work from home? These days, thanks to the Internet, this is less of a dream and more of a reality for many people. More and more companies are hiring remote workers, or creating remote jobs for their current employees. If you would like to be able to work from home and not have to commute every day, have m
Califo ia employers add 32,500 new jobs in January. And although that’s not true everywhere it’s a good sign. Any positive news on the job front must benefit all of us. The age old debate; is it what you know or who you know that is most important. I would say that 100% of the time who you know can and will open more doors for you than what you know. If you are looking to change fields, get that big promotion or sidestep into a new industry knowing the right people is going to take you all the way. Bob Burg takes it one step further when he says 'it isn't just what you know, and it isn't just who you know. It's actually who you know, who knows you, and what you do for a living'.
Being fired is not the end of the world although it often looks like it. You feel rejected by the very same people that a day before were your friends/colleagues. This experience is definitely not something âeasy to digestâ; as a result, you will experience feelings of anger and frustration. These feelings are normal, taking into account that your entire career comes to a crossing point. For a number of people, this experience can be devastating. The level of stress rises

You strolled into work securely (if unenthusiastically) employed and stumbled out, pink slip
Time was that being ‘old’ in the job market meant 70, maybe 60. Now, when you hit 40, you can be considered ‘over the hill.’ It’s mostly because of stereotypes. Even though people are living longer and healthier lives, employers still worry that an older employee will cost more money for healthcare. They also believe, wrongly, that older employees won’t understand technology. Many organizations think that people who didn’t grow up in the digital world can’t or won’t adapt fast enough.
The Great Recession has fundamentally shifted the employment landscape in this country. The rules of the game have changed and your success in The New Economy will depend on your ability to adjust to these new rules. I truly believe we are entering into an age of "career entrepreneurialism", an age where careers aren’t pursued they are created.

Basically, man develops psychological fear of the unknown and unforeseen. This case is usually typical in a job interview, where symptoms of nervousness almost constantly take place. Preparation is the most effective way to rid of this fear and in turn lessen nervousness and anxiety. The best preparation involves both physical and mental preparedness. In this case mental preparation implies realizing some of the standards for interview questions. Standard interview questions
What if focusing on your passions could create more prosperity than you have now? Many people fear that changing careers or retooling their business will set them back financially. This fear often stops them before they even test the feasibility of their ideas. Changing careers or having your business change direction can cost you time and money in the short run, but that investment has potential to give you substantial returns. Investing now might just give you more prosperity and happiness over time. It is worth exploring before you write off the possibility.
You have assessed your strengths and weaknesses and made a list of your past accomplishments. You have committed them to memory so that they are readily on the tip of your tongue during interviews. You have examined your previous jobs to gain insight into what is important to you and motivates you. nnGood! You are starting off on the right foot. All that homework is not only necessary, but commendable because the majority of people short-cut it and go into an interview cold.n
Get Financially Fit. Who doesn't fantasize about a second career? Maybe you've always wanted to run away with the circus or make mouth-watering chocolates, or perhaps there something you've always wanted to do that's more rewarding and more meaningful.
One of the best pieces of career advice I ever received was, “Stop looking for a job. Start looking to meet people.” During my first year in the MBA program at UC Berkeley, I was at an informal “consumption function,” our ritual Friday afte oon drinking in the courtyard. I met the wife of one of my classmates and discovered that we shared an interest in applying technology to human resources issues. She told me that her group at Intel wanted to assess different technologies,
This week one couldn't help but overhear all the chatter around Belief and Faith. Entrepreneurs are quietly questioning their beliefs and inquiring if they're in the right business, what is "wrong," and when will they realize a flourishing business. Wow…powerful stuff indeed, and what a great time to take a look at your beliefs and draw a line in the sand as to where your belief system lies. If you are willing to believe the Truth, you'd know that you are perfect as is and are worthy of all the gifts life has to offer. This is simply the Truth.
What’s the future hold? Industries that are doing well or expanding, such as healthcare, green/alte ative energy and certain tech sectors, will continue to hire mid and senior level executives, according to executive recruitment firm CT Partners. Finance and pharmaceuticals are also looking up, however, at large corporations generally the outlook is underwhelming. Ed Savage, Managing Director for the L.A.
Getting ready to start work can be very excitingâthere are so many things to do. Fear is a useful emotion that is self-preserving. Our intuition tells us to be afraid so that we may arm ourselves from harm. When you see a dog bearing its teeth your fear tells you to stay away. Anxiety is not fear. Anxiety is preparing for a perceived fear that is most likely emotional and not environmental. Anxiety never protected anyone from danger but indeed from doing all the important things that matter in life such as create, take risk, practice, produce, make good judgments and connect with people. Anxiety is practicing failure in advance.
Tired of the same old advice? Then read these job hunting tips you have never heard before. 1. Don't write a resume. Instead of sending out a resume, talk about who you are. Whenever someone asks for ‘something in writing’ to forward to a contact, don’t do it. Instead, ask to speak directly to that contact. Don't post a resume online, but do post to blogs and other websites in your field. WHY NOT - we often rely on resumes, sending them out blindly to be deleted or discarded.
As the days become shorter, school back in session and Halloween around the corner, the settling in begins to take place in our bones. We begin to slow down our lives and beg for a bit more structure and calm. There's simply something so special about the scent of fall candles, the beautiful colors, and (Oh, let’s don’t forget!) the stunning fall wardrobe. With all these delicious treats waiting around the corner, I’m keenly aware that fall has us begging for structure.
Do you wake in the morning and inwardly groan at the thought of another rush-hour commute to your workplace and another day in the office? Perhaps itâs time you considered going it alone as a freelancer. Many of us entertain the idea of breaking free from our employers and working for ourselves as freelancers but very few actually make that break. But is the freelance life as flexible as we imagine or is it a life of long hours, problematic clients and financial stress? You

This morning I woke up to a normally lighthearted news report. You see, I stopped being a member of the CNN club many years ago. The morning news to which I now listen is typically one that lightens the day and brings a few smiles to its viewers; in turn, I'm able to intelligently carry on high-level conversations about what's taking place in the world.
I am a firm believe in “You are what you attract.” If you find that you continue to attract the same type of negative friends, unfulfilling relationships, drama, bad luck, negative energy, unrewarding career, bad health, poor physical image, etc, then I bet you are spending a lot of time telling yourself that you do. I have seen this over and over in many of my clients.
A job search can be a complicated beast, partially because technology and individual industries have evolved to an extent that we don’t know how to keep up with their changes. Unfortunately, some of those changes, whether surprising or not-so-surprising, could hurt us along the way if we aren’t aware of them. As you conduct your job search, it’s good to keep track of everything that could have a negative impact on its progress. That way, you won’t feel sideswiped as you try
Whether you are a first-time interviewer making your first transition to the world-of-work or a seasoned professional, these 10 interviewing tips are essential to your success! 1. Look Sharp. Before the interview, select your outfit. Depending on the industry and position, get out your best duds and check them over for spots and wrinkles. Even if the company has a casual environment, you don't want to look like you slept in your clothes. Above all, dress with confidence. If you look good, you feel good. 2. Be on Time.

Although it looks like 2010 will be better than 2009 for jobs and for changing your career, you will need to be much smarter in how you go about your search process. “A jobless recovery will be a part of our new reality, particularly in heavy manufacturing, retailing, automotive, banking and home building,” according to experts such as Ed Savage, managing director of the L.A. division of Stanton Chase, a global executive search firm. (www.stantonchase.com) What will that mean for career transition and finding a new job? 1.
When you think about your next career move, are you thinking about your own career aspirations or your company’s needs? Looking to upgrade your career for more security, opportunity or money? Want to be part of a growth industry? Interested in green jobs? Now is the time. “Since gas prices went up to $5 a gallon, there has been historic momentum for green jobs,” according to Dr. Kirwan Rockfeller, Director, Sustainability Leadership, UC Irvine Extension. But what, exactly, is a green job? 1.
A resume is paradoxically important and not important. It's important because it makes you think through your career and analyze what your accomplishments were and how they relate to your next job. But on the other hand it's not important because 80% of jobs are got through networking where it is the personal relationship that is key not what is written on the page. Here are the key points to think about when you work on your resume: A resume is a selling tool not a statement
Appreciation is a way of giving thanks to the things we are glad about in our lives. It is one of the major keys to living a joyful life. According to the dictionary it is “thankful recognition”. It’s a way that can lift your spirits quickly when you start to focus on all that you are grateful for in your life.
Too often, countless Americans stumble out of high school into ill-suited jobs, incompatible relationships and no plans for the future. They hang with discordant jobs in order to write checks for food, rent and car payments. Without using an ounce of common sense or rational thought process, they marry the first person they “fall for” in the dating game. In a flash, they face baby diapers, low-paying jobs, mounting bills and fracturing relationships in 50 percent of the case
People have debated the issue of time versus money for centuries. Which one makes people happier? Knowing the answer as it relates to your employees and customers could make and save you hundreds of thousands of dollars. Of course happier employees make for happier customers. Happier customers will then purchase more of your products or services. The answer to the question of time versus money lies in your company’s culture as well as some proven data.
Not many people have scored their dream jobs Recent statistics show that fewer than half the people surveyed like their work. That’s a dismal number and what is even sadder that even among those people who said they like their job there are even fewer employees who are in their dream career.
When I was at college I had a seasonal job working for the post office during the holidays. Christmas and Hanukah meant that there was lots of extra work needing to be done. Even in a recession it’s still the season to be merry and that means extra work for someone whether you’re a driver or a party-planner! So how does this help your job transition? Firstly, a temporary job can lead to a permanent job. Working in a retail store or for a hotel you will be a prime candidate for a new job if one comes up. Secondly, you may take a job to see how you like it.
As we discussed yesterday, not all vacancies are openly advertised and recruited for by the Company in question. Many start their jou ey with a recruiter or headhunter. Sometimes, typically if they are with an agency, they will be being advertised somewhere with the Company name omitted. If they are with a headhunter you will only hear about them when you get 'the call'. So, how do you get yourself inline for these jobs? Well, the first thing you can do is to research who the top agencies are within your chosen field and then contact them.

*Truthiness was first used, in its satirical sense, by Stephen Colbert to describe things that a person claims to know intuitively without regard to evidence or facts. Our Wizardly friend and co-author of Return of the Boomers, Phil Newbold, offers examples of truthiness as it relates to many people in the American workplace. Philâs examples of truthiness: âYou canât teach old dogs new tricks. Older workers canât keep up with younger workers. Older workers cannot adap
They are just uncomplicated position queries so why worry so significantly about it, when what matters here is that you just know you're technically qualified. In the event you continue along this line of thought then I will let you know this: you will find no beneficial jobs accessible to suit your needs. By Frosty Wooldridge In recent weeks, my son Trevor quit his well-paying pharmacy tech job in Denver, Colorado for a “room and board” position in a quiet village in the Austrian Alps. Even though there are many different careers that are available, not all of them are going to be beneficial when it comes time to actually finding a job. This has become painfully evident to many individuals who were already in the workforce and have seen the economy take a turn for the worse. Many individuals who thought they were in a secure position now find themselves unable to find work to be able to support themselves and their family. Although that is the case for many, there are also careers which continue to be in demand, even when the economy is not working as it should.
I DESERVE THAT BAG OF M&M'S!! I am sure as I travel through this journey of writing my thoughts and musings down that I may from time to time "progress" or "digress," I am not really sure if those are correct words, but they fit my mind just now. Perhaps, I may even "sidegress" on occasion. (Miss Kiker, please forgive me...I know that you would not approve of that). Maybe you can give me a little latitude, just on this paper! I mentioned during my first post, that I would be
Bill Gates said the internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow. With the growing numbers of people online and the popularity of the most frequented sites it certainly makes sense to use this exceptional tool in your modern day job search. Whether we are mired in a deep recession, in the “green shoots” stage or rapidly rebounding out of a recession all depends on who you ask. But as I talk to clients around the country, things are not so great and the feeling is still recessionary. So, number one priority? Keep your job, even if you don't like it. It makes sense to find a new job before you quit, especially with unemployment at ten percent. Make sure you are wanted - volunteer for the key projects, keep your skill set current and forge relationships with decision makers, customers, vendors and suppliers.
For those going through a career change, you know how stressful the entire situation can be. Finding a new job, making new resumes and going to several interviews may seem like an incredibly daunting process. However, the career transition doesnât have to be a nightmare. There are small little extras that you can do to spruce up your resume and ensure that interview. One of these things is a cover letter. nnA cover letter is your way of demonstrating that you have done the
1. Go back to school. The most expensive and longest route. Although getting an MBA may help you get a higher paid job, the tens of thousands of dollars it will cost you must be paid back before you start reaping the benefit from your new education. 2. Go back to school but get somebody else to pay. For example, some states or counties will pay you to re-train as a teacher. Other examples are joining the military, getting a scholarship or a foundation grant to study. 3. Work part time in your new chosen career while still working in your old job.

As you make changes in your life and grow, you will want to increase your circle of friends. A great way to do that is to take a friend, business associate, or mentor to lunch. You may be invited to a party, Chamber of Commerce or Rotary meeting or other business networking event that includes a meal. Either way you want to make sure you project the professional person that you are. Bad table manners are inexcusable in business and your personal life. They project a person that has not reached a sophisticated level of accomplishment.
ââWhen you donât know you imitate othersâârnNowadays in the midst of more choice than ever, we often âdonât knowâ which to choose. So what do we do? We rely on othersâ choice, overlooking the basic fact that these others too most probably based themselves on others. Well you might not have realized it but this is called branding. Relying on others to market your brand, product or yourself is high level marketing and once you achieved that you can call yourse
The Wall Street journal CEO Council recently created a task force on what would restore confidence in business. The CEOs of Eastman Kodak, Verizon Communications, WPP Group and the Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School all agreed that the leading recommendation is for companies to focus less on shareholders benefits and short-term profits and more on the professional development of its workforce, its customers needs, and sustainability.
Corporate Culture is a harmony of people coming together for a common purpose – their communication with each other, how they manage their time and energy, the way they organize their work, and the way they are led. Leaders communicate values – the things that really matter to us, ideas and beliefs we hold special so that we may gain clarity and focus for consistent decision making.
As a staffing company owner over the past seven years, I have had a unique vantage point to learn about the problems people face in the âNewâ workforce. I use the word âNewâ because many businesses have learned to do the same amount of work with far less employees because of the weak economy. This trend will continue for many years to come and the youth of today will have to prepare accordingly. That means more competition for fewer jobs and the salaries will be lower

You’ve read about so many famous people who didn’t tell the whole truth in their biographies. Maybe they weren’t REALLY the CEO of their company, or the “All-American” sports player. We’ve all heard of the doctors who really weren’t or the specialists who “bought” their degrees.” Maybe it has all just snowballed because here in America, we don’t believe that “embellishing” our expertise is lying. Be kind to yourself, especially during difficult times. This is so easy to forget! Often we are our own worst enemy and critics. We need to learn to love ourselves and have patience. You must learn to listen to your needs and accept them as they are. So when a crisis strikes and you feel the need to cry or sleep, then allow that. Realize that you are doing the best you can given where you are right now.

When it comes to networking into the hidden job market, introverts (like me) may think they just won't be able to do it. But, they can. And in a way that works for them. Extroverts may not recognize just how many networking skills they have—and how to best leverage them.

Statistics show the average person can expect to change jobs three to five times in his or her lifetime. The typical restaurant manager will do so even more often. One reason for all these career changes is that restaurant managers often don't make informed choices. Often times many restaurant managers end up simply working for the company that responded to their resume. Perhaps little to no effort was put into researching the concept’s growth potential, culture, direction, or style of management its leadership prefers.
