Jeff O’Connell’s book Sugar Nation is a dumb down version of many better texts on the market dealing with America’s cravings for carbohydrates. The author appears to have achieved mediocrity in a presentation that is well beyond his grasp. Mr. O’Connell treats diabetes as though it is the personal fault of anyone who has acquired the disease in adulthood. Simplifying the complex is not one of the author’s strong points. Any internet search on this topic would establish that his statistics cry out to be challenged. In a recent interview on the radio program Coast to Coast, Mr. O’Connell had trouble defining the most basic terms that is characterizing a disease that is ravishing the nation. Sugar Busters has approached this topic in a more intelligent format with authors who are well versed in the subject matter. The author’s illusive diet will not prevent diabetes or any other disease. Mr. O'Connell should have done his homework. Present research shows a high protein calorie restricted regimen can drastically reduce the incidence of diabetes and so many other medical problems. Mr. O’Connell pays reverence to the other poorly educated diet gurus who claim a different diet each week to cure America’s obesity problem. Fortunately, most Americans have caught onto these scam artists with doctoral degrees and do not follow their advice. For a more solid program that has been peer reviewed by the best read The Millenium Diet, The Practical Guide for Rapid Weight Loss. Written by someone has treated thousands with this dreaded disease. Mark Davis, MD platomd@gmail.com
