During a romantic surrey ride around Central Park in New York City with my wife, I learned an amazing thing about horses that applies to humans as well.

The driver told us that horses need blinders because they’re easily spooked if they see something in their peripheral vision. He explained that from a young age, the horses are trained with blinders and become quite comfortable wearing them; the less they see of the world, the more secure they feel.

Now let’s take a cross-species leap. We humans do the same with our mental and emotional blinders. We acquire “stovepipe” vision. We become hemmed in by our belief systems, stereotypes, and general convictions about what makes the world tick. No one purposefully limits his or her vision, but our human blinders cut us off from a wealth of opportunities coming our way every day.

The people who are willing to think the unthinkable, who are willing to imagine beyond the comfort zone of their blinders are the ones who see the incredible transformational opportunities that life offers them — a whole new world opens up to them.
