Teens: How To Help Them Get Over Depression
Written by Preeti Narayan
Like adults, teens also feel depressed at times. This may be caused due to number of reasons like a fight with friend, failing to win in competition or sports, low score in test, exam stress, or any other problem at school or college. In such cases, what can you do to help your teenage son or daughter deal with such situations?
First thing to do is to help your teen get out of that depressing mental state.
Because no matter what problems your children are facing, they can’t solve it unless they first calm their mind and bring it back to ‘normal’ or positive level.
I have found that if parents encourage their teens to do any of the 7 simple things given below, they can get out of the blues easily and feel better.
Ask your teenage daughter or son to do any of these things when they are feeling down:
1. Go for a long walk.
2. Read jokes or motivational book or magazine.
3. Move towards the light! Light helps to change mood, especially sunlight. If you have a garden or terrace, then you can ask your children to move around or sit under the sunlight for few minutes, unless it’s hot.
4. Hang out with nature. Sit under the shade of a tree and watch the flowers, birds and butterflies.
5. Drink a glass of some sweet fruit juice and watch a comic movie. The sugar in the juice helps to improve your teen’s mood better than any other snack. If you don’t have time to prepare juice, you can also give bananas to your teens. As it is filled with nutrients and good carbohydrates which are not only good for health but also help to improve mood.
6. Go out and play with friends.
7. Take the pet for a walk.
These are seven simple actions that will help to improve your teen’s mood.
Now comes the next part.
Once the mood improves, sit down with your teen. And try to discuss any underlying problem or situation that might be troubling your teenage son or daughter. Together, try to find a practical solution to handle the situation.
In this way, you can wipe out the root cause of your teen’s bad mood or depression.
