The Evidence Proves Guns Reduce Massacres & Stop Criminal Violence. Part 5 in The Right Response?

Despite the abundant evidence, democrats, socialists, and liberals continue to believe that even more stringent gun bans will stop the slaughter. How do the more intelligent and thoughtful ones maintain a straight face given the massive incontrovertible evidence to the contrary? In America, defensive gun uses - to deter criminal violence - occur around a hundred times more often than to commit crimes. Yet gun control advocates just ignore all the evidence proving that, in mass shootings, guns save lives. American Experiences There were 18 random mass shootings in the 1980s, 54 in the 1990s, and 87 random mass shootings in the 2000s. In 2012 - just one year, not a whole decade - there were 14 mass shootings, see previous article, the Right Response #3. At Sandy Hook, it's reported that the principal “lunged” at the killer. Yet suppose she’d had a gun? How many children would still be alive today if she'd been able to shoot him? But gun control advocates simply ignore such difficult questions. An extensive 2002 study by the Centers for Disease Control examined firearms laws from all across the country and concluded gun bans are ineffective in thwarting violent criminals. The recent history of mass shootings in the USA shows that every single mass shooting of students has taken place in a place where guns were supposedly not allowed. Defensive Gun Uses in America The US National Survey of Private Ownership of Firearms (NSPOF) study* performed in 1994 found approximately 1.5 million defensive gun uses annually. Some estimate one million to as many as 2.4 million defensive gun uses per year. Even the lowest estimate gives 55 to 80 thousand defensive gun uses per annum. Yet there are around fourteen thousand US gun deaths per year, according to wikipedia. Using the very lowest estimate, comparison shows gun users are responsible for defending four times more lives (55/14) than killing people. But how many of those killed are the criminal assailants themselves? The higher estimates give over a hundred times more defensive uses than deaths. Unequivocal proof that guns stop countless murders along with much criminal mayhem. The Effect of Gun Bans in Colorado's Universities After Colorado passed a concealed carry law in 2003, the University of Colorado prohibited the right to protect yourself with a firearm, while Colorado State University decided to allow concealed carry. So there's a recent and valid comparison of gun law effectiveness. The University of Colorado, under the gun ban they claimed was for safety, experienced a rapid increase in crime, while Colorado State enjoyed a rapid crime decline. Crime at the gun-free University has risen 35 percent since 2004 while, in the same time frame, crime at Colorado State allowing concealed carry dropped 60 percent. In 2002 at Colorado State, there were 47 reported sexual offenses, whereas with concealed carry in 2008, there were just 2. Once concealed carry became legal, they saw a similar drop in crime in virtually every other category. Such experiences prove firearms in responsible hands effectively deter both criminals and crime. Yet fanatical Democratic politicians ignore such conclusive crime-reducing benefits and are again seeking to ban guns - supposedly to increase student safety - at Colorado universities. The Colorado State Student Senate resoundingly endorses the pro-concealed carry policy: "They’re not making things safer, they’re making things worse." Gun Bans Overseas England now has a virtually complete ban on owning guns. Yet, according to the Wall Street journal: "Within a decade of the handgun ban" and their confiscation from registered owners, "crime with handguns had doubled according to British government crime reports. Gun crime, not a serious problem in the past, now is. Armed street gangs have resulted in some British police carrying guns for the first time."** Since Australia has clamped down on gun ownership, violent crime has increased. More Widespread Gun Ownership Works The number of ship hijackings off the East coast of Africa has drastically decreased. Why? The aversion to guns on ships has vanished, and ships now carry armed guards. As a result, piracy off the Somalia cost has dropped dramatically, from 49 in 2010, to 31 in 2011, and just a handful in 2012. "Pirates have never successfully hijacked a ship that had armed guards." says the Expensive, Diminishing Threat of Somali Piracy report. Switzerland, with automatic guns above every fireplace, has a homicide rate half that of Britain with a very stringent gun ban. All of which strongly suggests both British and American citizens would be far safer rejecting all gun bans and instead following Switzerland's example.
