Every morning on my daily walk with our two dogs, Sparky walks nicely by my side. Surrey, on the other hand, pulls and pulls, straight ahead, tight on the leash. If I walk faster she pulls harder. She may not know where she is going, but she knows she needs to get there faster.

When we stop at the popular “pee-mail” message centers throughout the neighborhood, Sparky intently studies the messages as if he was studying for an exam and didn’t want to miss a question. Surrey lingers only long enough to scan the headlines … it’s as if she’s taken a speed reading course. Just the facts and then she’s movin’ on.

Both of our dogs are trained as therapy dogs. When we are visiting the retirement community, Surrey is always looking down the hall and peering around the corner. When she’s in a resident’s room, she wants to know what’s going on in the hall. Sparky, however, goes with the flow. He absorbs all of the movement around him with a casual “I’m here and it’s all good” attitude.

Surrey is all about the destination. And Sparky is on a journey. There’s nothing wrong with either quality … we all need a bit of both. The expectation and anticipation of what lies ahead is exciting and motivating. But sometimes it’s a little stressful. If we would “go with the flow”, enjoy the moment and a quiet pat on the head … how much more enjoyable and stress-free could our lives be?
