Just as most of us have physical clutter in our lives from time to time (or all the time); most of us have emotional clutter as well. Emotional clutter consists of negative emotions and self-limiting beliefs that we have hung on to long after they have outlived their usefulness. Just like physical clutter, we stockpile it because of the mistaken belief that it is important to keep. We think it will remind us of some important experience or life lesson.
Unfortunately, more often than not, emotional clutter just clutters up our lives and sabotages our dreams. The top three reasons for clearing out all that emotional clutter:
1. You can then find and use your resources.
Just as physical clutter blocks your ability to see where you have put your car keys or that important paper, emotional clutter blocks your ability to see the resources you have available to you to be successful, solve problems and create the sort of life you'd like to be living.
Getting rid of emotional clutter allows you to see what resources you have available to utilize in your life. Those resources consist of your talents, your gifts, and your unique abilities. When you can clearly see your resources, it is easier to use them both more effectively and more efficiently.
2. You can overcome limitations.
When you get rid of emotional clutter, you are able to overcome your limitations. Most of the limitations we place on ourselves have nothing to do with realityBthey are limitations we have created from our beliefs or fears of failure.
Getting rid of emotional clutter allows you to overcome those limitations that are really simply limitations in your thinking. When you believe you can do something, you can. Imagine what you could accomplish if you absolutely believed you could not fail.
3. You can get unstuck and move forward.
Emotional clutter is the leading cause of being STUCK in your life or your business. When you are stuck, you are stopped from moving forward. You may expend plenty of energy, but you are treading water.
Negative emotions from the past keep you stuck because of the fear that you will re-experience similar situations with a similar emotional impact. That inventory of bad experiences is nothing more than emotional clutter, which, if you hold on to it, will keep you stuck.
Getting rid of emotional clutter allows you to put past experiences behind you. Once you get the positive learning from them, you are able to move on. There is no need for you to hang on to emotions or limiting beliefs from the past. When you rid yourself of emotional clutter, you can more clearly see your options, and have more choices. This allows you to move toward a life of greater happiness and success. nn(c) 2009 Linda S. Pucci, Ph.D.
