There are five different ways to help control your blood sugar. There is not just one way to bring it in check. Careful planning and strategizing are needed to bring your sugar under control. Food intake has potential to raise your blood sugar. Exercise and insulin intake will reduce your blood sugar. It seems pretty easy but it is a constant balancing act that you have to master to feel good and reduce the risk of complications brought on by diabetes.
Diet: The foods that you put into your body have a direct affect on your blood sugar reading. It is obvious to tell that sweet foods will spike your reading. Cookies, cake, candy bars, and pop are examples of things to avoid. Foods that are high in carbohydrates will also affect your readings. For example, pastas and breads are high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are basically a complex sugar. You may not want to eliminate carbohydrates but you need to realize what they will do to you. It is also important to have many smaller meals versus one big one. This will control the severity of the blood sugar spike after a meal.
Exercise: Everyone needs to exercise but it is definitely important for a diabetic. The more you exercise the less insulin that you will need. There are more benefits to exercising than the reduction in insulin. You will become stronger and boost your self esteem.
Insulin Intake: When you inject insulin it immediately goes to work on the excess sugar in your blood. You have to know how long the insulin you are using will take to start working and how long it will stay in your system. There are different kinds of insulin and they all work a little bit differently.
Test On A Regular Basis: When you test on a regular basis you can see how you are doing and can adjust the variables. The variables are diet, exercise, and insulin usage.
Regular Schedule: If you do things the same time everyday it will help keep things in check. Your schedule is another variable to explain why your blood sugar is where it is at. You can eliminate this variable by doing things at the same time every day.
It is easy to get caught on the “blood sugar rollercoaster.” Up and down and up and down. It feels much more comfortable when it is a nice smooth drive. So to control blood sugar you need to recognize the three things that affect your readings. Diet – Exercise – Insulin: Once you understand that these are the three things that affect blood sugar use them to bring your readings to a normal level. It is not an easy process. For example, “at this time after I eat everyday my blood sugar is high.” “What do I need to do?” Maybe there are too many carbohydrates in my meal. Maybe I am not taking enough insulin to cover the meal. Maybe this is the perfect time to take a walk every day. Perhaps, a combination of all three.
