Humans are great at tolerating! We put up with, accept, take on and are dragged down by people’s (other’s and our own!) behavior, situations, unmet needs, crossed boundaries, incompletions, frustrations and problems. You are likely tolerating more than you think.

Tell me what you are tolerating? Please take some time to write down all the things you sense that you are tolerating. As you think of more items, add them to your list. Don’t be surprised if, once you get started, you can think of a lot more tolerations than you expected. Our next step will be to eliminate them.

How do you eliminate your tolerations? For some of them, just becoming aware of, and articulating them will cause you to naturally start handling, eliminating, fixing, growing through and resolving them. For others, you will have to make a conscious decision to not tolerate that item, behavior, person, etc. any longer. People often find that once they see and feel the power of eliminating their tolerations, it becomes like a wonderful game and they don’t want to stop until they are toleration free!

Tolerations come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in all areas of your life. They are all those nagging things that drain your energy. For example: I really need to: call the electrician, fix the broken light switch, clean off my desk, take the car for a tune-up, finish a report or project, organize my office, unpack, buy shampoo, talk to my boss, I can't stand my son's messy bedroom, the way my neighbor lets stuff pile up in his front yard. You get the idea. Keep writing until you run out of things to write. If you run out of space first, start on a new piece of paper.

Typical Toleration Locations:
Work: Manager, Working Condition, Procedures, Requirements, Hours, Job Tasks, Environment, Equipment, Company Culture, Co-Workers, Compensatio

Home: Anything broken, In the way, Dirty,
Others: Close Friends, Spouse, Children, Social Friends, Relatives

Yourself: Self-harshness, Criticism, Behaviors, Home, Car, Clothes
